Dylan O’Brien’s Heartwarming Tradition That Keeps Him Connected to Teen Wolf!

For approximately ten years now, Dylan O’Brien has been absent from portraying beloved character Stiles Stilinski on MTV’s Teen Wolf, yet the anticipation for the 2023 movie spinoff (streamable via Paramount+) demonstrates that many fans continue to care deeply about this role. Despite not featuring in Teen Wolf: The Movie, O’Brien recently disclosed a Teen Wolf tradition he has maintained across every project since the sci-fi series kickstarted his career in 2011.

In a career that spans many years and includes significant roles like leading the Maze Runner series and starring in Taylor Swift’s “All Too Well” short film, Stiles had his first major credit in O’Brien’s project before these accomplishments. Despite not appearing in the Teen Wolf movie, he reminisced about Stiles to EW, sharing that there’s a specific aspect of this character he has carried forward into every role since then. He stated:

The role will forever hold a special place in my heart. I continue to don the shirt I wore during that job, which was my initial screen t-shirt from my acting career. I’ve kept it as part of a small tradition, wearing it on the first day of shooting for every new project. I feared I had lost it, but luckily, it was just blown away by the wind on a chaotic, windy day. I rushed across the park to find it in a bush. Being quite nostalgic, its loss would have been deeply upsetting for me.

It’s fortunate that Dylan O’Brien hasn’t significantly altered his size since “Teen Wolf” debuted in 2011, as I suspect it might have taken a toll after so many years and numerous film and TV roles! Interestingly, he didn’t don the blue Beatles shirt for most of the pilot episode, and the forest running scene was quite dim, but the actor has continued to wear the shirt on set since then. Thankfully, he didn’t misplace it permanently in the wind.

Because the show “Teen Wolf” can now be streamed by anyone with a Hulu subscription, new generations have the opportunity to explore the ups and downs of its storyline. Re-watching the very first episode to examine the clothing, it was almost startling to see how young all the cast members appeared. Later, O’Brien pondered upon the series continuing to captivate teenagers even after so many years have passed.

I’m consistently astounded by how popular that show remains among younger generations, considering its humble beginnings as a small engine that could. Frankly, I never imagined we would make it past a single season, let alone maintain the enduring appeal it has. Regardless of what life brings, I will always cherish the memories and impact this show has had on me.

Apart from securing a complete first season for “Teen Wolf”, it continued for an impressive total of six seasons before concluding on its 100th episode in 2017. While co-stars Tyler Posey and Crystal Reed had previous acting credits, including “Maid in Manhattan” and the “CSI” franchise respectively, by the time the show debuted in 2011, Dylan O’Brien was new to the entertainment industry. Kick-starting a career with a successful show is certainly something worthy of pride.

Over the past few years, I’ve found myself gracing the silver screen more frequently than television sets, with roles like Ponyboi in 2024’s film, Saturday Night, and Twinless in 2025, which is set to hit theaters in September of that year. If you’re hankering for some good old Stiles Stilinski action, though, Hulu has got you covered with all their episodes. As for Teen Wolf’s second movie, there’s been a flicker of interest from another cast member, but we’ll have to wait and see if this franchise has more tales to tell, and whether I’ll ever return to it beyond my tradition of wearing those iconic t-shirts.
