Electronic Arts (EA) is permanently shutting down one of its big-name games within the next 24 hours, starting January 12th. This is the first major game shutdown of 2026. Unfortunately, if you don’t already own the game, you won’t be able to play it, as it’s been unavailable for purchase since summer 2025. While physical copies were sold in stores, you’d need to find one quickly if you want to try it before it’s gone.
Starting January 12th, BioWare’s action RPG, Anthem, will no longer be playable. Because the game requires a constant internet connection, shutting down the servers means the game will be completely inaccessible. While Anthem may eventually be forgotten, those who played it in 2019 will remember it as a major topic of discussion that year.
BioWare’s Lowest Point
As a long-time fan, it feels like BioWare hasn’t really hit their stride since Dragon Age: Inquisition back in 2014 – and honestly, that game was amazing! After that, Mass Effect: Andromeda came out in 2017, and it was a huge letdown. That’s when things really started to go downhill for them, in my opinion. It wasn’t a bad game, exactly, it just didn’t live up to the incredible Mass Effect trilogy we all loved, and it had a lot of technical problems too.
BioWare’s newest game, Dragon Age: The Veilguard (released in 2024), hasn’t been well-received and is being compared to the troubled launch of Mass Effect: Andromeda. While the Mass Effect series recovered from Andromeda, The Veilguard could unfortunately spell the end for the Dragon Age franchise.
Between its successful role-playing games, BioWare experienced a major setback in 2019 with the release of Anthem. This was their first attempt at an online, constantly-updated game, and unfortunately, it didn’t go well. Considering BioWare was already struggling to recreate its past successes, it’s surprising EA approved the project. Anthem was a significant failure – BioWare quickly stopped supporting it, and it received a dismal 54 on Metacritic. It’s actually remarkable the game’s servers remained online for as long as they did.
We’d love to hear your thoughts – feel free to leave a comment below or join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum. And just a heads-up, two more EA games will be shutting down later this month.
