Effective October 7th, the popular video game publisher Electronic Arts (EA) has announced that it will permanently discontinue one of its AAA titles from its library. Consequently, this decision will result in the termination of all online services associated with the EA game in the upcoming months. On platforms like PS4, Xbox One, and Steam, players will no longer be able to access significant parts of the game and many of its key features after this date. However, they will still have access to the single-player content.
Although the online functions have been stripped from the EA game, they likely won’t take it off the market due to its strong single-player aspect. Whether they’ll lower the price to reflect these changes isn’t clear yet. Given past trends, it may be difficult to make a fair price assessment.
Regarding the game and its online services being discontinued, it’s about Need for Speed Rivals from 2013. Electronic Arts (EA) hasn’t given a specific reason for shutting down the online services, but it’s likely because maintaining the servers costs more than the amount of players actively playing the game justifies. In 2025, it’s safe to say that not many people are still playing Need for Speed: Rivals. Additionally, EA is probably making minimal profits from the game. Furthermore, servers not only have high operational costs, but they also need constant maintenance to protect them from hacking attempts.
Just as anticipated, and true to form, EA didn’t issue a grand public announcement regarding the issue. Instead, subtly, they updated their website to announce that the game will be closing down in October.
If you’re new to gaming, Need for Speed: Rivals came out in 2013, not from the usual developers, Criterion Games, but a newcomer called Ghost Games. This was their first game ever, and it was the 20th title in the popular racing game series. The critics seemed to like it quite a bit, as its Metacritic scores ranged from 75 to 80.
Since the release of multiple Need for Speed games, the loss of online services in Need for Speed Rivals may not significantly impact many fans of the series, but it’s still disappointing for those who wish to revisit the game’s history. Moreover, this development serves as a concerning indication of what we might expect from future Need for Speed releases.
