Electronic Arts (EA) will be closing the servers for three of its games next month, making them unplayable. One of these games is from BioWare, the studio behind popular franchises like Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The other two games are developed by Maxis and EA Tiburon. While these games are no longer available for purchase, their servers have remained online until now.
Starting January 12th, the game Anthem will no longer be playable. Electronic Arts (EA) is shutting down the servers for the BioWare-developed multiplayer action RPG, which originally launched in 2019 and received negative feedback. BioWare stopped actively developing Anthem in 2021, and the game was removed from digital stores on August 15th of this year.
Two Other EA Games Shutting Down
Another EA game ending support next month is The Sims Mobile, which will officially shut down on January 24th. Developed by Maxis as a mobile version of The Sims 4, it launched a year before Anthem and was removed from app stores on October 21, 2025.
Next month will see the final of three EA games cease operations, and this one—NBA Live 19—is the least impactful. EA is shutting down NBA Live 19 on January 30th. Originally released in 2018 by EA Tiburon, it remains the newest game in the NBA Live series, as EA stopped developing it after its initial release. Like The Sims Mobile, it was also removed from digital stores in late October.
Why Are These EA Games Shutting Down
EA hasn’t explained why it removed these games from sale or shut down their servers. Maintaining online games requires ongoing costs for servers and staff. Plus, NBA Live 19 had licensing agreements that eventually expire. It’s likely all three games were losing money for EA, and in NBA Live 19‘s case, those licenses wouldn’t be renewed if the game wasn’t profitable. However, this is just an educated guess, as EA doesn’t typically share the reasons behind these decisions.
In January 2026, three more games will shut down, following two closures this month. One of those recent shutdowns was a popular, high-budget game originally released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The other was a much older title, twelve years old, which closed unexpectedly without any warning.
