
An unassuming ‘Shutdown Notice’ page, found on the Electronic Arts (EA) website, has disclosed that the game servers for the initial PlayStation 4 release, Need for Speed: Rivals, will be deactivated in October.
The online servers for the game will be turned off on October 7th, 2025, so any online features will no longer function after that date. Unlike ANTHEM, which is also being closed down by EA, Need for Speed: Rivals does have an offline, single-player mode where you can compete against artificial intelligence opponents.
The PS3 edition was launched as well, yet it wasn’t displayed on the shutdown notice for the Online Service at the time I wrote this.
The game combined elements from Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit and Need for Speed: Most Wanted by letting you decide whether to play as a racer or a police officer in an expansive open-world environment. Upon its release, we found the game enjoyable enough to give it a 7/10 score. Our review stated: “The intelligent competition dynamic at the heart of the open-world adventure amplifies the experience with nail-biting tension, making evading your rivals, whether online or offline, an exhilarating endeavor every time.
Starting from the 7th of October, you’ll find that your open world is continually populated with AI racers and police officers, replacing the presence of real players.
