EastEnders boss Ben Wadey reveals old spin-off Kat & Alfie: Redwater exists in “parallel universe”

For avid EastEnders enthusiasts, it’s likely they caught the 2017 spin-off titled “Kat & Alfie: Redwater.

The British-Irish series resumed a narrative begun in 2015 and 2016 on the primary soap opera, where Kat Moon (Jessie Wallace) found out that at teenagerhood, she had not only birthed daughter Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan), but also a twin boy who was adopted without her awareness.

In a separate storyline, Kat embarked on a journey to Ireland where she discovered her long-lost child, who turned out to be the ruthless Father Dermott Dolan, portrayed by Oisín Stack.

As a movie buff put into words, here’s how I would rephrase it: The show came to an edge-of-your-seat finale for me, with Kat seemingly meeting her watery doom due to Dermott’s actions, and her husband Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) grappling with the threat of a brain tumor – a medical twist that mirrored the main soap’s storyline.

The show only had one season before being cancelled that same year, and both Kat and Alfie reappeared in the main soap in 2018, signaling their survival. However, since then there’s been no reference to the storylines of Redwater or Zoe’s twin brother.

In September, after a separation of twenty years, Kat and Zoe were delighted to be reunited. At the same time, it came to light that Zoe had given birth to twins in 2006 – a girl who seemed to have passed away, and a boy who was left behind due to her depression.

Redwater continue to be a part of EastEnders, given it hasn’t been mentioned in the primary series before?

During a media gathering after Zoe’s comeback, executive producer Ben Wadey addressed questions regarding the authenticity of Redwater’s incidents and if we’d uncover the fate of Zoe’s twin sister.

Wadey replied: “That’s an intriguing query. Back then, the series Redwater was simply remarkable. To put it mildly, it seems like it aired quite some time ago, and today, one could argue that it offers a unique perspective compared to Walford, possibly even from a parallel reality.

It appears that Redwater might not be relevant for the moment, as there’s no indication so far that Zoe’s twin will be brought up again.

It’s great to know that Zoe will have her share of personal dramas this Autumn, and it seems like the rest of Walford won’t be short on their own dramatic events either.
