Next month, the BBC will highlight the challenges and rewards of caregiving with a week-long focus, and the EastEnders storyline featuring Will and Janet Mitchell will be a key part of that.
I’m really excited about ‘Caring Matters’ week, happening from May 23rd to May 30th! It’s going to be a great chance to highlight the amazing work unpaid carers do and share their stories – it’s so important to recognize the huge role they play in our families and communities all across the country.
EastEnders viewers will remember Will (Freddie Phillips) as a loving and protective brother to Janet (Grace), who has Down’s syndrome. He’s stood up for her several times, including when she was bullied in 2021, and he challenged their grandfather, Stevie (Alan Ford), about how he treated her when Stevie first appeared on the show in 2024.
Next month on the BBC, things are really going to ramp up for this young actor. He’s already balancing a lot, but now he’ll be dealing with even more responsibility – not only caring for Janet, but also stepping up to support his family after Honey Mitchell, played by Emma Barton, gets injured. It’s a lot for an 18-year-old, and I’m really interested to see how he handles it all on screen.

The ‘Caring Matters’ campaign begins with a special ‘Songs of Praise’ episode. Reverend Kate Bottley will discuss the rewards and difficulties of caregiving, and how faith plays a role.
A special episode of Bargain Hunt will air featuring Eric Knowles honoring the many people who volunteer and work to help others.
This week, viewers can also watch “Natalie Cassidy: Caring Together,” a documentary that follows the EastEnders actress as she works towards her dream of becoming a qualified carer.
This week, Cassidy will be on Saturday Kitchen Live and The One Show to discuss her new documentary. Meanwhile, Morning Live will focus on the vital work of unpaid carers, providing useful tips and advice, and pointing people towards available support and resources to help with their wellbeing.
