EastEnders icon reveals tragic news in dramatic early BBC iPlayer release

Sam Mitchell (Kim Medcalf) has arrived home to Albert Square in EastEnders — with some bad news.

She instantly upset her brother, Phil, whom she hadn’t spoken to since she ended his marriage to Kat and took his share of their aunt’s money.

After a quick confrontation with Zoe Slater, who believed she was being harassed, she entered the Mitchells’ home and started stealing from their safe.

Nigel Bates mistook the woman for his daughter, Clare, and didn’t stop her. After seeing her, he described her to Phil, who then thought Nicola was the one involved.

However, after challenging her, he spotted Sam across the Square.

She quickly ran off and called her son, Ricky (Frankie Day), whom she hadn’t spoken to in a while, asking him to meet her at McKlunky’s.

She explained to him that she wanted to secure his future by depositing the stolen money into a high-yield savings account. Ricky wished he could have a normal relationship with his mother, but he didn’t think it was possible.

It all happened so fast! She barely finished talking before she was off again, sprinting for the tube station. Ricky immediately told his dad, Jack Branning, what had happened, and he took off after her without a second thought.

There, Sam opened up about why she had to come back – she believes she’s dying.

Over the next month, the show will feature a storyline where Sam discovers a lump and her loved ones encourage her to see a doctor about it. The story will focus on her journey with a potential breast cancer diagnosis.
