For the very first time, longtime EastEnders star Steve McFadden was victorious in the Serial Drama Performance category at the National Television Awards.
In the current year, McFadden emerged victorious in the category recognizing his portrayal of Phil Mitchell, a role he’s been playing since 1990. Similar to other award categories, McFadden’s win was solely decided based on public voting.
In the competition, McFadden emerged victorious by surpassing other finalists such as Eden Taylor-Draper, who plays Belle Dingle on Emmerdale, and Jack P Shepherd, known for his role as David Platt on Coronation Street.
Additionally, Debbie Webster actress from Coronation Street, Sue Devaney, and Jacqueline Jossa, a cast member from EastEnders where McFadden acts (specifically playing the role of Lauren Branning), were also in contention for the award.

After receiving his award, McFadden embraced his co-star Jessie Wallace, who was presenting it with Michelle Ryan. Overjoyed and touched by the recognition, he expressed feeling ecstatic about winning and considered it an honor to even be nominated alongside the other candidates in the same category.
He extended his gratitude to everyone who cast their votes in his favor, expressing sincere appreciation. Furthermore, he acknowledged and expressed thanks to his exceptional, intelligent, attractive, remarkable co-stars from EastEnders. Lastly, he thanked the show’s team for granting Phil Mitchell 35 years of foolishness.
As I prepared to deliver my speech, I couldn’t help but feel a surge of emotion that was evident to all, causing me to brim with tears beforehand. However, when I began speaking, I was met with a resounding standing ovation from the captivated audience.
This year, Phil Mitchell found himself at the center of a dramatic and impactful narrative. His struggles have included battles with depression, which led him to consider ending his life back in February.
Ever since then, I’ve not only been immersed in the world of cinema but also taken on the role of caregiver for my childhood friend Nigel Bates. Recently diagnosed with dementia, Nigel and I made a pact to stand by each other till the end of our journey. Since then, I’ve been his rock, providing him the care he needs.
