EastEnders icon teases Cindy Beale and Max Branning’s potential for “rollercoaster” romance after flash-forward episode

Michelle Collins believes a real romantic connection could develop between Cindy Beale and Max Branning on the soap opera EastEnders.

In a recent episode, the BBC soap opera hinted that Cindy could be one of Max’s future wives, as the storyline jumped ahead to 2027.

Okay, so picture this: they had this incredibly intense, unexpected connection on Christmas Day in 2025. It was a total whirlwind! But things got really messy when their little grandson, Jimmy Beale, was being christened – that’s when everyone found out about their past. It was a huge shock, to say the least, and created a lot of drama!

Cindy deeply resents Max because of how he’s treated her family. He had a relationship with her daughter, Lucy Beale, and was also responsible for the death of her son, Steven Beale.

Despite their differences, the two unexpectedly teamed up to fight against their common enemy, Jasmine Fisher (Indeyarna Donaldson-Holness), who is known for her manipulative and dangerous plans.

At The TopMob Covers Party 2026, we chatted with Michelle Collins about Cindy and Max’s rocky relationship, and wondered: are they destined to be together, or is it a disaster waiting to happen?

Michelle wasn’t sure if Max and Cindy were equally flawed, but she felt Cindy was probably a little more compassionate than Max. She found them an interesting pair, suggesting Cindy might actually need someone like Max, as opposed to someone more similar to Ian.

Despite this, Collins didn’t give their potential future romance much of a long life expectancy.

Honestly, when Collins talked about it, I didn’t get the sense it would be smooth sailing. They seemed to think things would be pretty unpredictable – a lot of highs and lows, like we’d be constantly wondering if it would work out or not. It sounded intense, but also really captivating, if that makes sense.

Cindy’s love life has always been dramatic. She’s had multiple affairs, including with Simon, David Wicks, and most recently, Junior Knight – all while juggling relationships with Ian and still having feelings for her ex-husband, George Knight, Junior’s father.

Recently, even though George went through a divorce from his wife, Elaine Peacock (played by Harriet Thorpe), he’s now going to have a baby with Nicola Mitchell (Laura Doddington). This makes a romantic relationship between Cindy and George seem impossible.

Questioning whether George had seemingly moved on, Michelle answered that he did so “very quickly”.

She didn’t think Cindy and George were ever a good match, saying, “It just didn’t seem like they were meant to be together.”

She explained that she understood why they didn’t get back together, pointing out he was now with Nicola. She described the confusing cycle of intense relationships, moving on, and then questioning whether to revisit the past, ultimately realizing it’s best to let things go and move forward.

Michelle mentioned she hadn’t filmed any scenes with Colin for around six months, which she found strange. She added that this kind of thing is typical for a long-running drama series.

That recent episode showing the future revealed that Cindy and George will both still be living in Walford in 2027, meaning anything is possible for them.
