EastEnders icon Tamzin Outhwaite is on a hot streak of unforgettable theatrical appearances.
The actress, recently acclaimed for her performance in the London production of Entertaining Mr. Sloane, will soon be back on stage playing Beverley in a new production of Abigail’s Party.
Outhwaite first performed the role in October 2024 at the Theatre Royal Stratford East. Now, she’s bringing the show on tour, with performances scheduled at seven theaters across the UK from June to August 2026.
Abigail’s Party, a darkly funny play by English screenwriter Mike Leigh, explores the themes of social class, what people value, and hidden desires in 1970s England.
I remember reading about the original production of this play – it first hit the stage in 1977 at the Hampstead Theatre in London. It was a real breakout moment for Alison Steadman; she played the character Beverley and it truly launched her career. It’s amazing to think about how one role can change everything for an actor!
It’s 1977 in Essex, and Beverly is throwing a party. Drinks are plentiful, Demis Roussos is playing, and she’s prepared classic party snacks like cheese and pineapple on sticks. Beverly and her husband, Laurence, are excited to meet their new neighbors, Angela and Tony, and have invited them over for drinks.
Beverley is considered a truly memorable character in British theatre, and if you didn’t see the original performance by Outhwaite, now’s your opportunity to experience it.
