Okay, so EastEnders actually did get the most viewers on Christmas Day, which is great! But honestly, it’s a bit worrying because overall, the show’s ratings have taken a pretty big hit recently. It’s a mixed bag – a win for Christmas, but a bigger problem if fewer people are watching generally.
As a big soap fan, I was checking the ratings, and it’s great to see EastEnders really delivered on Christmas Day! Those two special half-hour episodes pulled in 3.3 million viewers – that’s more than both Coronation Street and Emmerdale managed, which is a pretty big win for them.
The BBC soap opera experienced a noticeable drop in viewers, with the Christmas special attracting two million fewer people compared to last year’s episode, based on initial overnight ratings.
EastEnders’ viewership dropped, causing it to fall to seventh place in daily ratings. Both Coronation Street and Emmerdale also struggled, failing to rank among the top ten most-watched shows.
Christmas TV ratings dropped this year compared to the huge success of 2024, when shows like the Gavin & Stacey special (12.3 million viewers) and Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl (9.4 million viewers) were big hits for the BBC.
This year, 6 million people tuned in to watch The King’s Speech on channels like BBC, ITV, Sky News, and GB News. While slightly down from last year’s 6.8 million viewers, it still ranked as one of the most-watched programs, landing in the top ten.
Even though overall ratings were down this year, the BBC still had most of the most-watched programs. “The Scarecrow’s Wedding” drew 4.3 million viewers, and the final “Strictly Come Dancing” special featuring Tess and Claudia was close behind with 4.2 million, making them the second and third most popular shows.
Michael McIntyre’s The Wheel, Call the Midwife, Gladiators, and Amandaland each attracted about three million viewers.
And rounding out the top ten was a great mix of shows! We had EastEnders, the fun quiz show 1
Recent episodes of EastEnders over the festive period featured several storylines reaching a climax. Max discovered Jack had betrayed him, the notorious Chrissie Watts unexpectedly returned, and Zoe Slater’s stalking situation took a dramatic turn.
