Even with its work on popular games like Grounded 2 and Fable, Eidos Montreal is facing difficulties. The studio recently announced it’s laying off 124 employees, and its studio head, David Anfossi, has left the company.
Shifting priorities for the project and how those changes affect our production and support teams have led to some difficult decisions. The studio wants to be clear that these decisions aren’t a reflection of the skills or work ethic of the impacted employees, and we’re committed to supporting them through this transition.
It’s unclear why David Anfossi left Eidos Montreal. The studio has only stated its gratitude for his work and wished him well. They haven’t named a replacement yet, but are developing a plan to manage the change and will share more information soon.
The studio has faced multiple rounds of layoffs. While the most recent occurred in December 2025, and impacted an unknown number of workers, it wasn’t the largest. After being acquired by Embracer Group in 2022, the studio cut jobs in 2024 as part of cost-cutting efforts. Further layoffs affected 75 employees in April 2025.
The studio has reportedly canceled many projects over time, including a collectible card game similar to Lord of the Rings, a fresh start for the Legacy of Kain series, and a new Deus Ex game, among others. While many developers have faced layoffs recently, it’s hoped this studio will soon have better luck.
