There’s been a lot of talk about cancelled game projects at Eidos Montreal, and a recent report claimed the studio may have scrapped as many as ten games in the last six years. However, insider Tom Henderson clarified that the recent layoffs at the studio are connected to their next game, currently known internally as ‘P11’.
The studio also uses a consistent internal naming convention for all its projects: a letter ‘P’ followed by a number. This applies whether they’re developing a game themselves or assisting another developer. As a result, games Eidos Montreal has supported, like Fable, Grounded 2, and OD, all share code names starting with ‘P’ and followed by a number.
The studio’s current location on P22 doesn’t indicate it has scrapped ten internal projects. According to Henderson, the number of cancelled projects is closer to “half a dozen,” including a Deus Ex game and a reboot of Legacy of Kain. He also clarified that these cancellations happened a couple of years ago.
Henderson recently shared that Eidos Montreal has several projects underway, while also finishing up work on a big one. This new game will be an open-world, third-person action adventure, and it’s being developed by the team that previously created Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
So, I heard from someone on the inside that the recent layoffs were all about Project 11. Apparently, they’ve finished the design and built all the systems they needed, and now they’re getting ready for the beta test. They’re planning to launch the game sometime next year, which is pretty exciting!
Regarding potential projects Eidos Montreal has been working on, they reportedly explored a game based on The Lord of the Rings. This appeared to be a way to capitalize on the franchise, as Embracer Group owns the rights to create games based on the IP.
He explained that it appeared they were simply trying to profit from an existing brand. While he understood the business decision, the cancelled project was a Lord of the Rings card game envisioned with a narrative focus, similar to Telltale Games. He was told it didn’t progress very far in development, and the cancellations were directly tied to it.
There were recent reports that Eidos Montreal had, at one point, been developing a reboot of the classic adventure game Legacy of Kain. Details were scarce, but a former employee’s resume mentioned working on a “dark fantasy action RPG” that would have revived a well-known franchise centered around vampires.
There’s been some uncertainty about the recent layoffs at Eidos Montreal and what it means for their upcoming games, so let me explain. The layoffs are related to their next internal game, currently known as P11. As the game moves towards the beta testing phase and eventual launch, the team size is being adjusted.
