Eidos Montreal Hit With New Round of Lay-Offs Affecting Unknown Number of Employees

Eidos Montreal, the team behind games like Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, has recently had another round of layoffs. The company hasn’t officially commented, but former employees have shared the news on LinkedIn. Samuel Daher, who used to be the gameplay director at the studio, was one of those who posted about it.

Daher recently shared that they enjoyed their time at Eidos and would have preferred to continue working there, but due to current circumstances, they are seeking a new role where they can focus on design for upcoming projects.

Eidos Montreal has announced another round of layoffs, following a previous reduction in April that affected 75 employees. The company stated the earlier layoffs were due to a lack of suitable positions for those employees within other teams.

I was really bummed to hear the news from the studio today. They announced they’re having to let go of up to 75 people because a big project is wrapping up. It’s not because anyone did anything wrong – they said it’s just that they can’t find spots for everyone on their other work, which is so tough to hear. It’s a real shame to see talented people go.

Many skilled and experienced professionals are looking for work, and we’re helping them find new opportunities.

Eidos Montreal has experienced repeated layoffs in recent years. In January 2024 alone, the company cut 97 jobs across its development, support, and administrative departments.

Our studio has been affected by the current global economic situation, difficulties within the gaming industry, and the recent changes at Embracer Group. As a result, we’ve made the tough decision to lay off 97 employees across our development, administrative, and support teams.

Although Eidos Montreal’s current projects are a mystery, reports from April suggested they were trying to get a new Deus Ex game approved. Unfortunately, some companies considered the Deus Ex series too specialized for a broad audience, and weren’t interested. This came a year after Embracer Group, Eidos Montreal’s parent company, cancelled a Deus Ex project that had been in development for two years.

After creating Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Eidos Montreal has been assisting other studios that are part of Xbox Game Studios. They’ve notably contributed to the development of Playground Games’ upcoming Fable and Obsidian Entertainment’s survival game, Grounded 2.

It’s been a while since Eidos Montreal had a big release! Before Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, their last full game was Shadow of the Tomb Raider way back in 2018, when they were still part of Square Enix. They’ve also helped out with the other Tomb Raider reboot games over the years, and before that, they made awesome titles like Thief in 2014 and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided in 2016. I’m a big fan of all their work, and I was really excited to see them take on the Guardians!
