Recent reports suggest Eidos Montreal has cancelled several projects in recent years, but it appears the studio is now working on a significant new game. A senior artist at the studio, Derian McCrea, listed a “AAAA Game Project” on his LinkedIn profile as part of his work history at Eidos Montreal between June and August 2025, hinting at a major unannounced title in development.
During his time at the studio, McCrea built detailed, high-quality 3D models and reusable pieces for creating game environments using Maya and Unreal Engine 5. He worked closely with designers and artists to build engaging and efficient game levels in Unreal Engine 5. His involvement in creative reviews, where he provided feedback and focused on strong visual presentation, suggests the game is likely well into development.
According to his LinkedIn profile, McCrea didn’t work at Eidos Montreal for very long. He stayed at Ubisoft much longer – over four years – where he worked as an environment artist.
Gamers often joke about the idea of a “AAAA” game, a term popularized by Ubisoft. The company first used it to describe their pirate game, Skull and Bones, and recently, Ubisoft producer Krasimira Yakovlieva called both Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Assassin’s Creed Shadows “AAAA” titles. Originally, Ubisoft introduced the term to explain why they planned to sell Skull and Bones for $70 before it launched.
Eidos Montreal’s last big game release was Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy in 2021. Since then, details about their next project have been scarce. We’ve heard reports of several games that were started but ultimately cancelled, including a new Deus Ex title, a reboot of Legacy of Kain, and even a Lord of the Rings card game. Besides these, Eidos Montreal has been helping other studios develop games like Fable, Grounded 2, and OD. Internally, all of these projects were referred to using codenames that began with the letter ‘P’ followed by a number.
According to a new report, Eidos Montreal is working on a game called P22. It’s described as a large, open-world action-adventure game, and is being developed by the team that created the 2018 title, Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
In December, Eidos Montreal experienced layoffs related to a project internally known as P11. Sources suggest these cuts weren’t due to poor performance, but rather because the initial phases of development – including design and system building – were finished. The game is currently expected to launch later this year.
