It’s clear beyond doubt now that Alex Garland is just as passionate about Elden Ring as its many fans are. Not only has he played the game repeatedly, but he was so keen to bring a live-action Elden Ring film to life that he wrote a script for it before anyone gave it the green light.
Within an article in The New Yorker focusing on A24’s growth within the film industry and future plans, there’s a brief tale of how the Elden Ring movie came to be. As narrated, A24’s head of film Noah Sacco met Garland following the director’s enthusiastic phone conversation about the game. Sacco then observed Garland playing it.
Enthused by the fantasy world’s resemblance to Lord of the Rings, Sacco enthusiastically agreed when Garland proposed the idea of A24 collaborating on it, exclaiming something along the lines of “Absolutely!”. Rather than simply presenting the pitch to FromSoftware and Bandai Namco, Garland went a step further by developing a detailed 160-page script ( supplemented with 40 pages of visuals ) to persuade creator Hidetaka Miyazaki that his commitment was genuine.
As someone who’s conquered Elden Ring multiple times and considers its most challenging bosses merely “a walk in the park,” I can’t help but relish the thought of facing a trial equally daunting, all for FromSoftware’s recognition. Frankly, it feels eerily similar to my persistence in convincing my friends to give Dark Souls a shot. Granted, I’m not scripting epic novels here, but if you were to read the messages I send them, they’d make quite the lengthy tale.
It’s intriguing that even though we’re unsure of the plot for the upcoming Elden Ring film, its director shares our fervor for it – a common ground between fans and creator. While not essential for the director, knowing that someone as deeply engrossed in this vast, quirky universe is overseeing the project offers a sense of comfort.
George RR Martin, who collaborated on creating the Elden Ring world, is also serving as a producer. Among Garland’s previous works are Civil War, Ex Machina, and Annihilation, and the Elden Ring movie news emerged earlier this year following rumors that were later substantiated by Bandai Namco.
