After it became known that A24 is developing a movie based on Elden Ring, director Alex Garland disclosed the measures he needed to take to gain the consent of the game’s creator.
Following the massive success of the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC released last year, it was announced earlier this year that Elden Ring will be making its film debut. The renowned writer and director Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Civil War, Annihilation, 28 Days Later) has been appointed to oversee the project.
As a dedicated gamer here, I can’t help but share some exciting insider info! In an exclusive chat with The New Yorker, A24’s big boss, Noah Sacco, spilled the beans on just how much blood, sweat, and pixels went into landing the rights for FromSoftware’s 2022 gaming masterpiece – yep, you guessed it, we’re talking about the game that’s been keeping me up at nights! This guy really put in the grind to make sure us gamers could get our hands on this epic experience. Talk about dedication!
During a conversation on the phone, Garland, known for his love of gaming, detailed the rules and mechanics of the game to Sacco. Later, during one of Sacco’s trips to London, Garland demonstrated the game in person to show off its features.
Excitedly confirming a potential interest, A24 echoed thoughts similar to Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films regarding an adaptation of the game. This sparked Garland to swiftly volunteer to write a script, aiming to engage legendary developer Hidetaka Miyazaki in the project.
The script, upon completion, totaled a remarkable 200 pages, including an additional 40 pages of pictures.
With a draft in their possession, they jet-setted off to Japan to confer with Miyazaki and his team, and from there, the tale goes that the events unfolded.
In the production, Garland isn’t the sole notable figure. He will be accompanied by George RR Martin, the mastermind behind Game of Thrones, who also contributed to the storyline for the initial game. Additionally, Peter Rice, Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich, and Vince Gerardis are also part of the team.
Although it hasn’t been officially decided, there’s a strong possibility that Kit Connor, best known for his role in Heartstopper and recently seen in Garland’s war film Warfare, could be the main character.
In a new step for A24, they are embarking on their second video game venture, following the adaptation of Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding. This time, they are delving into Elden Ring.
Among the numerous game adaptations that have surfaced recently, this can be added to the vast and growing sea, with titles such as The Legend of Zelda, Street Fighter, Super Mario Bros., and Sonic the Hedgehog being part of it too.
As for how Garland’s story will play out in the Lands Between, we’ll simply have to wait and see.
