In the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 releases, some games may encounter significant technical problems, particularly when played in handheld mode. As reported by Felix Sanchez from Nintendo Life, Elden Ring Tarnished Edition is one such title that encounters performance problems, specifically in handheld mode on the Switch 2. A video from Sanchez indicates that FromSoftware’s action RPG features visually impressive graphics; however, it struggles with frame rate issues, being limited to a maximum of 30 frames per second in handheld mode. Sanchez pointed out that during the Gamescom event, Bandai Namco prohibited attendees from recording gameplay footage of Elden Ring on a hypothetical Nintendo Switch 2. He also drew parallels between Elden Ring and the original Nintendo 64 release of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which was notorious for its low frame rates upon launch. Furthermore, he mentioned that Elden Ring’s frame rate would often dip to as low as 20 FPS and occasionally even 15 FPS.
Sanchez remarked in the video that it’s quite troublesome, and I can see why they want to keep this hidden. It felt similar to playing ‘Ocarina of Time,’ but the frame rate wasn’t always smooth; at times, it dipped to around 15 frames per second.
It’s important to mention that since its launch, the console version of Elden Ring has been running smoothly without many issues. However, the PC edition of this game has encountered problems like microstuttering, primarily due to how it manages shader compilation. Interestingly, even with the technical glitches in the PC version, Elden Ring performed quite well on the Steam Deck, a device that is comparatively less powerful.
Despite a few hiccups along the way, Elden Ring proved to be an absolute triumph for me and FromSoftware, as well as Bandai Namco. By July of this year, the expansion for Elden Ring, Shadow of the Erdtree, had already shifted over 10 million units globally since its release in June 2024. The main game? A staggering 30 million copies sold according to FromSoftware’s reveal back in April.
Elden Ring, upon its launch, became playable across various platforms including PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. In April, it was announced that a version for the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 would be released at some point in 2025 as well, featuring not only the main game but also the expansion named Shadow of the Erdtree.
The upcoming version of Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition on the Switch 2 will introduce two new starting classes – Knight of Ides and Heavy Knight, along with fresh armor sets, weapons, combat skill sets, and cosmetic customization options for Torrent. Players of other Elden Ring versions can access this content via a DLC named Tarnished Pack.
