Eli Roth, known for his horror films, returned to form in 2023 with Thanksgiving after a string of movies that didn’t quite connect with audiences. He first gained attention with shocking and intense films like Cabin Fever and Hostel, but later projects such as Death Wish, Knock Knock, and The Green Inferno weren’t as well-received. Roth also tried different genres, including family-friendly horror with The House with a Clock in Its Walls and documentaries with Fin. Now, his latest horror film has a release date and could potentially launch a new iconic slasher villain.
We were initially confused when we first heard about Eli Roth’s new movie. So many older horror films are being remade these days, we naturally assumed his project was a reimagining of the 1995 film Ice Cream Man. However, it turns out this Ice Cream Man will be a completely original story, and it’s scheduled to arrive in theaters on August 7th.
In addition to the release date, we also got an all-new teaser poster, which you can see below:

The Horror Section describes the new movie as follows:
I recently watched “Ice Cream Man,” and it’s seriously messed up! It starts out seeming like a perfect summer in a small town, but things quickly go downhill when this ice cream man starts selling treats that have truly terrifying consequences for the kids. Ari Millen, who I remember from “Orphan Black,” plays the ice cream man, and he’s creepy good. The cast is also great – Benjamin Byron Davis from “Guardians of the Galaxy 3,” Karen Cliche, Dylan Hawco, Sarah Abbott, Shiloh O’Reilly, Kiori Mirza Waldman, Charlie Zeltzer, and even Charlie Storey are all in it. It’s a wild ride, and definitely not what you expect!
In 2025, filmmaker Eli Roth started The Horror Section, a company designed to bring unique and daring horror films to audiences. Throughout his career, Roth has often challenged viewers with intense violence and gore, but still had to make edits to get his films approved by rating boards. The Horror Section gives him the freedom to release movies exactly as he envisions them, no matter how shocking they may be.
Judging by what he’s said before, Ice Cream Man might be his most brutal film to date. The success of the Terrifier movies – which grew from small releases into major theatrical events – showed Roth that audiences still crave truly shocking horror. He told Screen Rant earlier this year:
I’ve been thinking about making ‘Ice Cream Man’ for two decades. We actually had a script finished in 2003 or 2004, right after ‘Cabin Fever,’ but it just wasn’t ready. I revised it several times. Then, when I started my own company, the success of ‘Terrifier’ proved that audiences are open to unrated films. That’s when I knew it was time. I had previously fought to include certain violent scenes in ‘Thanksgiving’ but had to cut them. Then ‘Terrifier 3’ came out, and it all just clicked.
However, you’ll need to handle things on your own, since it’s Sony and they have very specific procedures. They even stopped production one Thanksgiving because after reviewing the initial footage, they weren’t satisfied and demanded a reshoot. I assured them I could still deliver the quality they expected.
After a series of disappointing films, director Eli Roth faced significant pressure with Thanksgiving. The movie originally started as a fake trailer for the 2007 film Grindhouse before becoming a full-length feature. Its positive reception from both critics and audiences led to plans for a sequel, but Roth has stated that scheduling conflicts with the popular cast members are causing delays.
