With the highly anticipated film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum slated for release in 2027, details about the cast are beginning to emerge. Following the huge popularity of the original Lord of the Rings movies, and the more moderate success of The Hobbit films, plus recent TV shows and animated projects, the franchise is returning to its large-scale cinematic style. The Hunt for Gollum has already confirmed Ian McKellen will reprise his role as Gandalf, and he hinted at a fan event that the movie will also feature a character named Frodo. Now, Elijah Wood, who famously played Frodo in the original trilogy, has responded to McKellen’s comments.
According to Screen Rant, Elijah Wood didn’t directly address Ian McKellen’s comments about a potential return, but offered a positive response nonetheless. He playfully stated he couldn’t confirm or deny anything, adding, “A wizard is to be trusted.” He then explained he wasn’t authorized to reveal details. Wood expressed his enthusiasm for the movie, noting that Philippa Boyens is co-writing and producing, and that the original creative team is reuniting to tell a story that will be a fun exploration of a beloved character. He also hinted that the filmmakers plan to create more films within this world.
What Elijah Wood’s Reaction Really Means For The Hunt For Gollum

Elijah Wood recently shared an update about The Hunt for Gollum that, while not a direct confirmation, strongly suggests he’ll be involved. His comment about trusting “a wizard” seems to hint at his return. The film’s story, taking place between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, naturally leads fans to expect Frodo to appear. While it now seems very likely he will be in the movie, the extent of his role is still unknown.
A good way to bring back characters in The Hunt for Gollum would be to show them as older versions of themselves, similar to how Ian Holm played an older Bilbo Baggins in scenes framing The Hobbit films. This would naturally connect the movies and allow the story to move forward with a new cast, while still including the original actors without relying on potentially jarring digital age-reduction techniques. Given Elijah Wood’s recent statements about more films, it seems a recast of his character is probably going to happen.
It’s difficult to see how Frodo could have a significant role in the new film, since his story at that point in time wasn’t directly related to the One Ring. Still, the news that audiences might see Frodo again is thrilling, and Elijah Wood’s response to Ian McKellen’s comments suggests he knows something about the movie and its creators. This makes it very likely that the original actor who played Frodo will appear in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, even if it’s a smaller role.
