Fans have been eagerly awaiting a reunion with the characters from the original *Lord of the Rings* trilogy since it ended in 2003, and *The Hunt for Gollum* looks set to deliver. Elijah Wood, who will almost certainly reprise his role as Frodo Baggins, recently shared some promising news about the upcoming story that takes place between the events of the original films.
Elijah Wood recently attended DesertCon in Mexico, and footage from his panel discussion has surfaced online. He spoke about *The Hunt for Gollum*, mentioning the film had many cameo possibilities. Wood particularly praised the project for reuniting the creative team behind Peter Jackson’s *Lord of the Rings* trilogy. He shared, “I’ve read the script, and it’s really good. It’s exciting to see Fran, Peter, and Philippa – the core creative team from *Lord of the Rings* – heavily involved again.”
He added that the same production designers are working on the project, and filming will take place in New Zealand. This will maintain a strong connection to the original *Lord of the Rings* films, as many of the same people are involved, which he’s really thrilled about. He described it as getting the band back together – reuniting all the right people to make something special.
The Hunt for Gollum Returns to the LOTR Trilogy Timeline
Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema announced in February 2023 that they were returning to the world of Middle-earth. In May 2024, they revealed the new movie, The Hunt for Gollum. This film will be a spin-off and take place within the timeline of Peter Jackson’s original Lord of the Rings trilogy, specifically between the events of Bilbo Baggins’ 111th birthday and his journey through the Mines of Moria. The story will reportedly center around Gandalf sending Aragorn on a quest to locate Gollum, as the wizard worries Gollum might reveal secrets about the One Ring to Sauron.
Although Gandalf, Aragorn, and Frodo are all in the script for the new movie, Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, and Elijah Wood haven’t officially been confirmed to return. However, Wood has said he’s read the script, hinting they will reprise their roles. For now, the only confirmed cast member is Andy Serkis, who will not only play Gollum again but will also direct the film, *The Hunt for Gollum*.
J.R.R. Tolkien’s world of Middle-earth is still incredibly beloved, especially *The Lord of the Rings*, which has a huge and dedicated fanbase. *The Hunt for Gollum* was planned as the eighth film in the Middle-earth series from Warner Bros. and New Line, following *The Lord of the Rings* films and the anime prequel, *The War of the Rohirrim*. Although both share the production company New Line, the Prime Video series *The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power*, set in Middle-earth’s Second Age, isn’t considered part of the official storyline established by Peter Jackson and Warner Bros.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is scheduled to .
