The upcoming film continuing *The Lord of the Rings* story has received an exciting update from one of its stars, hinting that it might become the expansive addition to the franchise fans were hoping for. Though many didn’t expect another *Lord of the Rings* movie after Peter Jackson’s *The Hobbit* trilogy, *The Hunt for Gollum* has quickly gained attention since its announcement and is currently slated for release in December 2027. According to recent comments from the actor, we might see several well-known characters return.
Over two decades ago, Peter Jackson took a huge risk by filming the entire *Lord of the Rings* story as one epic movie project, and it paid off spectacularly. His follow-up, *The Hobbit*, wasn’t quite as successful. Now, Jackson is revisiting Middle-earth, but this time as an executive producer, with Andy Serkis directing.
During an appearance at Mexico’s DesertCon, actor Andy Wood was asked about *The Hunt for Gollum*. He shared that he couldn’t reveal too many details, but described working on the film as a reunion with the original creative team.
I’m not able to share specific details, but I’m very impressed with the project. It’s a fantastic piece of work with a truly talented team. What’s especially exciting is that the original creative force behind ‘Lord of the Rings’ – Fran, Peter, and Philippa – are all heavily involved, along with the same production designers. Filming will take place in New Zealand, maintaining a strong connection to the original films. It feels like reuniting the team and getting everything running smoothly again.
What Does This Mean for ‘The Hunt for Gollum’?
New Line Cinema
I’ve been following the buzz around the new movie, and while Mr. Wood hasn’t explicitly said there will be a ton of cameos, what really caught my attention was his emphasis on “continuity.” It makes me wonder if we’ll see some familiar faces popping up to tie everything together, and it’s got me really excited about how well the story might connect to what we’ve already seen!
With Elijah Wood returning as Frodo, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, and Andy Serkis likely voicing Gollum again, it’s probable that many other original cast members will also be in the new film. Wood has indicated the movie will continue the story from the previous films, suggesting we might see familiar faces like Viggo Mortensen and Orlando Bloom make appearances.
Although nothing is confirmed until official casting news – which is anticipated soon, as the film is slated for release in just over a year – Viggo Mortensen, known for playing Aragorn in the original movies, has stated he would definitely think about returning to the role if offered the opportunity. He previously mentioned:
I’m not really familiar with what’s going on with that project yet, but I might find out. I really enjoyed playing that character and learned a lot from the experience. I’d only consider revisiting the role if it felt like a good fit for me now, considering my current age and everything. It just wouldn’t make sense to do it otherwise.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is currently set to be released on December 17, 2027.
