Ella Mai is deep in her feelings when it comes to her and Jayson Tatum’s little boy.
Ella Mai, who had her first baby in 2024 with a Boston Celtics player (though they haven’t revealed the baby’s name), recently shared how thrilled she is that her child seems to be showing an early interest in music, just like her.
She explained to Will Marfuggi of TopMob News at the MusiCares 2026 Person of the Year Gala on January 30th that she’s careful not to force her music on her son. She wants him to enjoy music naturally, not feel like it was imposed on him. However, she does make an effort to play music around him often.
She mentioned he’s really into the movie Sing right now, and she enjoys seeing him so happy with it. She playfully called him a ‘musical baby’ because of his love for music.
It’s still too early to know if Ella’s baby will inherit her singing talent, but at 31, she says he’s already a chatterbox, even if it’s mostly baby babble right now.
As she put it, he’s “talking mostly gibberish, but thinking that he makes sense.”
The NBA star and the Grammy-winning singer have generally kept their relationship private. They first ignited dating speculation in 2019 when she was seen at one of his basketball games. The athlete also has a 6-year-old son, Jayson “Deuce” Christopher Tatum Jr., with his former partner, Toriah Lachell.
Although they haven’t officially announced they’re dating, the singer behind “Trip” has occasionally offered a peek into what it’s like being a mother.
She explained on Capital XTRA in December that the situation felt strange because she hadn’t publicly shared the news herself. This made people unsure of whether or not to mention it, but she clarified that she does have a child and isn’t trying to hide it.
Ella generally keeps her private life to herself, but she shared that becoming a mother has made her feel more caring and protective.
She shared that motherhood has been surprisingly wonderful. She never pictured herself as a mother and didn’t feel particularly maternal, but now she can’t imagine life without her son, calling it an incredible experience.
