Scheduled for release in 2026, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is based on the book of the same name. The film follows a young Haymitch Abernathy as he competes in the 50th Hunger Games. The movie stars Joseph Zada, McKenna Grace, Whitney Peak, Ben Wang, Elle Fanning, Billy Porter, Glenn Close, Ralph Fiennes, and others. Francis Lawrence, who has directed previous Hunger Games films, directs, and the screenplay is by Billy Ray, an Academy Award nominee.
This story takes place 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games, making it both a prequel to the original four movies and a continuation of the 2023 film, The Hunger Games: A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. The film will show us younger versions of characters we’ve already met, like Effie Trinket, who was previously played by Elizabeth Banks and will be portrayed by Fanning in this new installment.
Though the movie isn’t scheduled to come out for over a year, Dakota Fanning recently announced she’s finished filming her scenes. She told Collider, “Well, I’m done filming it, so that’s done.” Filming for Sunrise on the Reaping isn’t completely finished yet, but it’s expected to wrap up this month.
Fanning shared how cool it was to see Effie on screen, and praised the costumes, saying they were great. Effie’s unique style reflects her position as a citizen of the wealthy Capitol, and Banks’ outfits throughout the films have become iconic, often featuring designer clothes.
Shifting to a different topic, Fanning expressed her admiration for the previous Hunger Games films and Elizabeth Banks’ portrayal of Effie Trinket, saying she was a huge fan. She hopes to live up to expectations in the new film. Fanning described the production as enjoyable, and spoke highly of director Francis Lawrence and the talented cast.
Dakota Fanning isn’t the only actor talking about the upcoming prequel. Grace recently told ScreenRant that she wants to deliver exactly what fans are hoping for, saying, “You always want to do your best to bring everything to life for the fans, and do everything that they want to see.” Both Fanning and Grace have indicated they’re aiming to please fans, though it’s still unclear how closely the movie will follow the source material.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping releases on November 20, 2026.
