What really made the first season of Ellis stand out wasn’t just the interesting locations, the tough crimes, or even Sharon D Clarke’s fantastic performance. It was watching the connection between her character and Harper (Andrew Gower) grow throughout the series.
This season of Ellis will show the continuing development of an unexpected connection between people who initially didn’t know each other, blossoming into a relationship built on mutual respect and appreciation for each other’s work.
We’re giving you a sneak peek at season 2 of TopMob! But movie fans, get ready – Harper apparently doesn’t recognize one of the most famous films ever made.
In the video, Ellis and Harper are driving to a new crime scene in Ellis’s car. Harper points out a strange detail from the case: someone took the time to wash sheets, which he finds surprisingly daring.

Ellis described something as a classic tactic from The Godfather, but Harper didn’t recognize the reference. Ellis playfully questioned how Harper had never seen the film, and Harper admitted it was on his list of movies to watch.
Ellis explains the film’s core idea: figuring out how to commit murder in public and avoid consequences. Harper then playfully wonders if they’re searching for an older film enthusiast, prompting Ellis to respond with a grin, “You’re looking for someone who deserves a slap, Detective Sergeant.”
This series consistently delivers both grim crimes and a welcome dose of humor, thanks to the dynamic between our two detectives.
Following her success in the first series, Detective Chief Inspector Ellis is back, tackling difficult cases in struggling communities throughout northern England. Partnered with Harper, she investigates a series of suspicious deaths that will challenge both her skills as a forensic investigator and her ability to cope with pressure.
The series begins in a quiet village rocked by the mysterious death of a respected figure, uncovering old grudges and hidden tensions. It then moves to a gritty industrial town where the death of a young woman exposes a secret world of control and abuse. Each investigation reveals more about the secrets, desires, and betrayals within the community.

I’m a big fan of Morgan Cormack’s work! She’s a Drama Writer at TopMob, and she really knows her stuff when it comes to TV and streaming. Before that, she was writing about entertainment for Stylist, and she’s also got a background in content marketing and freelancing. Plus, she studied English Literature, which I think really shines through in her writing!
