Ellis star reacts to season 2 twist and “kickass” stunt: “It wasn’t something I expected”

*Warning: This article contains spoilers for Ellis season 2 episode 2.*

Season two of Ellis keeps up its pattern of detailed investigations in close-knit communities, and the second episode includes several exciting and suspenseful confrontations.

As Ellis and Harper uncover more clues, they realize that Detective Sergeant Malcolm Oliver isn’t an ally – he’s actually the one responsible for the crimes they’re investigating.

The latest episode took an unexpected turn, but did the creator, Gower, anticipate it? Speaking with TopMob, Gower admitted he didn’t see the twist coming. He believes this surprise makes viewers more invested in future cases, even with the time gaps between them, and strengthens their belief in the team’s abilities.

You always expect twists and turns in a police show, but you don’t anticipate betrayal from your colleagues. It was a complete surprise. The writing is fantastic, especially how it portrays the complexities of police corruption and the impact of past trauma. It’s really compelling to see those personal and professional worlds collide, and that makes for a fascinating TV show.

The scene features a physical confrontation where Harper actually overpowers Oliver. What was it like for Ellis to perform such a different type of acting?

Gower said he wasn’t sure if the intention was to be funny or to portray Harper as more impressive, but he thought it was really good, according to TopMob.

Our stunt team is fantastic, and they’re currently working on Harper’s action sequences. It’s really fun when the script includes physical stunts – like jumping over car hoods or using a fire extinguisher – because it gives me a chance to be physically active as an actor, alongside delivering all the police dialogue. It’s great to showcase Harper’s physical abilities.

By the end of the episode, Harper starts sharing some responsibilities with Ellis, letting her spend more time with Grace while he takes care of their everyday tasks.

While it was a quiet moment between the pair, it’s definitely an important one for their dynamic.

Gower described the situation as a gesture of commitment, similar to a strong relationship saying ‘I’m here for you.’ He believes Ellis won’t anticipate this kind of consistent support from anyone, particularly someone like Harper, who is unexpectedly offering it.

For me, the most powerful part wasn’t anything Harper said, but what he did. He’s usually one for long explanations to Ellis, going on and on about the details. But here, at the end, his simple gesture – telling her to go and letting her – felt so much more meaningful. It was a beautiful moment communicated through action, and honestly, it spoke volumes more than any speech he could have given.
