Ellis star reflects on returning to key format feature for season 2: “It’s what makes us unique”

I was completely hooked by ‘Ellis’ – that fantastic detective drama! Even though the first season was short and sweet with only three episodes, I’m thrilled it’s returning for a second season. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

The new season features even darker cases, but still follows the same structure. We continue to see Detective Ellis (Sharon D Clarke) and DS Harper (Andrew Gower) traveling the country and solving crimes.

Clarke and Gower always valued the show’s tradition of filming in different locations across the country, and they were happy to see it continue in the second season. Gower told TopMob that returning to this format has been “amazing.”

Before the new season launches, Gower discussed how the show aims to highlight interesting and often overlooked parts of the UK. He explained that showcasing these unique locations was a key reason for getting involved, and it’s what sets the show apart.

He explained that getting a second season is fantastic because it allows them to improve on what already worked well in the show. That was the original reason they agreed to do it, and it’s the direction they want to continue taking it.

Viewers can look forward to four new episodes of season 2, as Ellis and Harper hit the road again to investigate local towns, solve crimes, and uncover interesting stories.

The show’s first season premiered in 2024, and thankfully, viewers didn’t have to wait long for more. The initial episodes were a hit, and because people loved the show, it’s been renewed for a second season.

When speaking with TopMob about the response to the first season, Gower described it as “truly amazing.” He added that, especially with the current economic difficulties, arts and entertainment are often the first to suffer when people cut back on spending.

After the first season, I told Sharon that getting a second season would be amazing, especially considering everything that was happening. It felt incredible when we officially got the go-ahead to continue.

I’ve had the amazing opportunity to work on different shows and explore various stories for 16 years. But there’s something truly unique about the reaction to ‘Ellis’. Whenever I’m back home or around London, it’s clear the show really connected with people, and that’s wonderful.

“Because without the audience, there is no second series so it was great to get the green light.”
