Ellis star teases “uncertain” new character dynamic – and what it means for the show’s leads

As a total movie and TV buff, one thing that really struck me in the first season of Ellis was Sharon D Clarke’s character constantly holding her phone. It seemed so significant, and it finally paid off in the last episode when she was absolutely thrilled to get a text from her daughter, Grace, arranging a phone call. It was a small moment, but it really hit me emotionally.

The second season shows the mother-daughter bond growing even stronger, which is heartwarming. However, this closeness presents new challenges for Ellis and Harper as they adjust to it.

In an interview with TopMob, Gower discussed how the relationship between the lead characters has evolved in season 2. He explained that they’ve developed a deeper, non-verbal connection – communicating more through looks and understanding each other with less need for words. He also noted that while Harper doesn’t necessarily see Grace and Ellis as a threat, he’s fully committed to his own path.

It’s as if he’s completely opened up, revealing everything. He’s saying, in effect, ‘Ellis, I’m all in. I’ve left my old life behind – my home, my routines – and I’m ready to fully commit to this new venture.’

He explained that the potential end of the relationship is threatened by the uncertainty surrounding Grace and how that will affect Ellis. He believes this is a smart, underlying tension created by the show’s creator, Siân Ejiwunmi-Le Berre, and her team. While Harper’s actions are self-centered, he ultimately needs Ellis for his career to survive.

He still has a lot to learn, and Ellis brings a wealth of experience from working in London and handling many cases Harper hasn’t seen yet. It’s good they’re already comfortable together, but questions remain about the long-term future of their partnership – do they both rely on each other equally? That uncertainty creates a really compelling dynamic.

Grace has always been an important person in Ellis’s life. While the first season left viewers wondering about Grace’s true intentions and whether she wanted a relationship with Ellis, this season focuses on Ellis becoming more involved in Grace’s world. It remains to be seen how this will impact Ellis’s career, if at all.

Look, things haven’t always been perfect for these two main characters, but I’m really happy to say season 2 shows a definite improvement – and honestly, that’s great news because the show’s central mystery is far from solved. There’s still a lot of crime to unpack, and I’m excited to see where it goes!

The discovery of local businessman Peter Barron’s body in the small village of Ashenham causes immediate shock and then suspicion. The local police are overwhelmed by the case, so Detective Chief Inspector Leighton brings in detectives Ellis and Harper to investigate.

I’m completely captivated by Ellis. She has this incredible ability to see right through things, and she immediately knew this wasn’t just an accident – it was murder. Even with the local police stretched thin and people in the town reluctant to talk, she’s absolutely determined to find out the truth about what really happened. I admire her tenacity so much.

Peter, the owner of a successful plant nursery and a respected local philanthropist, was once widely admired in the community. However, his recent proposal for a work release program for prisoners sparked significant controversy. While some saw it as a logical extension of his charitable efforts, others felt it went too far, as they were uncomfortable with former criminals joining their peaceful town. This divided the village, and Peter, who had previously brought people together, now found himself facing calls for accountability.

The town of Ashenham is full of hidden resentments, and Ellis is determined to uncover them. As Ellis investigates Peter’s death, the central question becomes: was he killed because of what he believed in, or was the killer someone close to him?
