Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights first reactions are in and it’s a “whole other level of hot”

Everyone is eagerly awaiting Emerald Fennell’s new film adaptation of Wuthering Heights. The director of Saltburn has hinted that this version will be a fresh, and significantly more sensual, take on Emily Brontë’s famous gothic story compared to previous movies.

Margot Robbie shared in an interview with Fandango that the director, Emerald Fennell, wanted the movie to be so emotionally impactful that it would make viewers cry uncontrollably. Now, initial reactions are coming in from those who have had a chance to see it early.

Critics have widely praised the strong chemistry between the lead actors, Robbie and Jacob Elordi. Jazz Tangacy of Variety described it as exceptionally passionate, while journalist Scott Menzel highlighted the palpable and intense connection between them.

Film critic Courtney Howard enthusiastically praised the movie, calling it a modern classic reminiscent of Emily Brontë’s work. She described it with a series of evocative adjectives – intoxicating, transcendent, tantalizing, bewitching, and hypnotic – and stated it was director Emerald Fennell’s best film to date.

Indiewire’s Anne Thompson described the film as a thrilling and exciting crowd-pleaser, while Matt Neglia of Next Best Picture highlighted its unique feel and captivating atmosphere. However, Neglia also noted that viewers will likely either strongly enjoy Emerald Fennell’s vibrant and daring style or not connect with it.

The film has received widespread praise for its visuals, thanks to Linus Sandgren’s cinematography, and its music, composed by Anthony Willis and Charli xcx. The production design and costumes have also been highly commended.

It’s worth remembering that initial reactions on social media are usually very upbeat. However, the overall impression could shift once the review embargo ends and a wider range of critics share their opinions after seeing the film.

Initial reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, suggesting this could be a major success at the box office.

The movie stars Robbie and Elordi as Cathy and Heathcliff, alongside Hong Chau, Shazad Latif, Alison Oliver, Martin Clunes, and rising star Owen Cooper.
