Emily Blunt Shares the Parenting Rule She Hopes Her Daughters Pass On

For Emily Blunt, kindness is so in.

Emily Blunt, known for her role in Disclosure Day, shared how she and her husband, John Krasinski, teach their daughters, Hazel (12) and Violet (9), to be empathetic in their daily lives at home.

In an interview with TopMob News, Emily explained that she consistently emphasizes to those she works with that she cares just as much about their struggles and mistakes as she does about their successes. She’s genuinely interested in everything happening in their lives and wants them to be authentic, without feeling the need to exaggerate or downplay anything.

She simply wants people to feel comfortable coming to her for support, offering a safe and comforting space. From that secure base, she believes they can then extend that same kindness to others, and that kindness will spread.

She also mentioned learning similar lessons from many people when she was a teenager.

She spoke fondly of the supportive figures in her life – amazing teachers, understanding parents, and a particularly special grandmother. She described her grandmother as accepting and non-judgmental, a quality she also saw in her parents. In fact, her father’s profession – defending people accused of crimes – required him to be open-minded and avoid quick judgements.

Emily continued, explaining that she’s learned this from life experience. She added that sometimes astrology might play a role, as some zodiac signs seem naturally more understanding and sensitive than others.

Emily had one subject she definitely didn’t want to teach her children: the alien language she picked up while working on the Steven Spielberg film, Disclosure Day.

Okay, so she finally admitted it! She didn’t practice at home, can you believe it? All that perfection, honed in secret! She said she’d just… click things, practice privately. Apparently, only Steven and the sound designer ever heard her do it – all those little noises! And honestly? She said if her kids started clicking like that, she’d lose it. Like, completely mesmerized and utterly freaked out. It’s just… the thought of it! I get it, honestly. It’s a whole thing.

You know, I’m a huge fan of Emily’s work, especially her role in Disclosure Day, directed by Steven Spielberg. It was amazing to learn she actually learned an alien language for the part! But she’s said she absolutely doesn’t want to teach it to her kids, which I totally get – some things are best left to the movies!

She admitted she hadn’t practiced at home, explaining she preferred to practice privately, developing a range of clicking sounds. Only Steven and the sound designer ever heard her do it. She joked that if her children started making those same sounds, she’d be both fascinated and completely unnerved.

The actress, who was nominated for an Oscar, even learned Russian for the part. Her co-star, John, didn’t realize how well she’d mastered it until he saw the finished film.

Emily explained that she made him wait to see the movie until a couple of weeks ago. When he finally did, he exclaimed ‘Holy…’ because he’d never encountered that phrase before.

Emily Blunt and John Krasinski are well-known actors, but to their daughters, Hazel and Violet, they are simply Mom and Dad. Recently, Hazel came home and asked if they were famous – a word the couple had never used around the house. Blunt realized someone at school must have said it. She responded by asking Hazel if someone had mentioned it and, while Hazel confirmed this, she didn’t share many details. Blunt and Krasinski intentionally avoid discussing their celebrity status with their children. They want Hazel and Violet to grow up feeling like ordinary kids, without any extra attention or feeling of importance. Blunt said she would be happy if her daughters remained unaware of her and Krasinski’s fame for as long as possible.

Emily Blunt and John Krasinski’s daughters are familiar with their parents’ work, having seen movies like Mary Poppins and Jungle Cruise, and even enjoyed some episodes of The Office. However, Blunt says her daughters don’t necessarily want to watch her or Krasinski act – they see them as parents first. Blunt joked that doing the Mary Poppins voice makes her ‘cool factor’ soar, but her daughters weren’t impressed with her villainous role in The Devil Wears Prada, calling her “the meanest person they’ve ever met.” There was also a funny misunderstanding when their daughter Hazel assumed Krasinski was an accountant after a parent mentioned The Office at school drop-off. Hazel even accused her father of lying when he explained he didn’t work with him!

Emily Blunt wouldn’t mind if her daughters, Hazel and Violet, chose different careers than her and John Krasinski. She admits it’s a tough profession. In a 2023 interview with Harper’s Bazaar U.K., she confessed she’d almost tell people not to encourage their children to become actresses, explaining how challenging and often disheartening the industry can be. She emphasized that despite advice to not take criticism personally, it’s inherently personal, particularly when appearance is constantly judged. However, Blunt and Krasinski ultimately want their daughters to follow their own passions. Speaking with Porter magazine in 2022, she shared that she hopes her daughters grow up with a strong sense of self and find something they’re truly proud of. She believes it’s wonderful when a passion develops naturally, as hers did – she didn’t grow up dreaming of being an actress, but discovered it along the way.

Even if Violet and Hazel don’t pursue careers in the film industry, they already contributed to their father John Krasinski’s 2024 movie, IF, which is about imaginary friends.

Krasinski explained to TopMob News at the film’s premiere that watching his daughters play sparked the idea. He noticed they were spending less time in their imaginative world during the COVID-19 pandemic. “I saw their lights starting to dwindle,” he said. “They were playing fewer and fewer imaginary games, and they started asking big questions and letting the real world in.”

He realized this was a natural part of growing up. “They were deciding whether or not they should let go of childhood,” he said, but he wanted to reassure them that their imagination would always be there. “You don’t have to make that decision. That magical world you created is there for you always, you can always go back.”

Krasinski also told Today that some of the characters in IF were inspired by his daughters’ imaginary friends, and he included them in the filmmaking process. “They saw my original drawings, I pitched them the movie, they even had notes on the trailer,” he shared. “It was great.”

For John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, becoming parents has been the most impactful role they’ve taken on. Krasinski shared with People after the birth of their daughter, Hazel, that having a child was a turning point, forcing him to be a better role model. He explained it inspired him to strive to improve himself daily.

Both Krasinski and Blunt are very involved parents and cherish the everyday moments. Blunt told Harper’s Bazaar U.K. in 2018 that while she felt unprepared for the magnitude of change, she’s incredibly grateful to have John as a partner. She admitted, like many mothers, she often wonders how she filled her time before her children, as parenthood is all-consuming and constantly demands her attention.

Emily Blunt took time away from acting to prioritize being home with her children. She explained on the podcast Table for Two With Bruce Bozzi that she wanted to be present for key moments in their daily lives – waking them up, taking them to and from school, and putting them to bed. She felt strongly that being there for them was essential.

Blunt admitted to feeling guilty when work took her away for long periods, a feeling she believes many mothers share. She emphasized the importance of women pursuing their ambitions, defining ambition simply as “dreams with purpose.”

Blunt and her husband, John Krasinski, approach the challenges of balancing work and family as a team. Krasinski explained on Pop Culture Moms that they aim to avoid “mom or dad guilt” by framing their work commitments as similar to other parents’ jobs that require time away. They have open conversations with their children about the realities of work and how it affects everyone in the family, emphasizing that they’re all navigating it together.

I’ve always admired how Emily Blunt and John Krasinski seem to approach parenting. I read an interview with Emily where she talked about how she was a very empathetic child, and that’s something she really tries to teach her kids. She wants them to understand and accept differences, and not to be afraid of them – or to make fun of anyone for being different. She believes that making mistakes is actually a good thing, because that’s how we learn and grow as people, and I totally agree! It’s such a positive and thoughtful way to raise children.
