Robert Sugden’s (Ryan Hawley) complicated love life is about to take another turn in Emmerdale.
The arrival of a man named Kev (Chris Coghill) at Keeper’s cottage took viewers by surprise when it was revealed he is Robert’s husband, and was visiting on a day release program.
Kev and Robert got married while both were in prison. This happened after Kev protected Robert from attacks. Robert later told his half-sister, Victoria (Isabel Hodgins), that simply having a safe place to sleep and feeling protected was enough to make him deeply loyal to Kev.
When Kev shared the devastating news that he was dying and had perhaps only six months left, Robert decided to visit and offer his support. He told Vic that pursuing a divorce from Kev wouldn’t be worthwhile, since Kev was wealthy and Robert stood to inherit his estate.

I quickly realized, as the week went on, that things weren’t as simple as Robert just wanting money from Kev. It seemed like there was more to it, because he really insisted he cared deeply about him. It was confusing, to be honest, and definitely more complicated than a simple financial issue.
As a long-time viewer, I found it fascinating how things unfolded with Robert and Aaron. Even though Vic told Robert he *had* to be honest with his ex, and soulmate, Aaron Dingle (played by Danny Miller), Robert kept insisting they were just friends. He figured there was no need to explain anything until *after* Kev’s funeral. It was classic dramatic tension, really!
Aaron shared with Vic that he truly appreciated Robert’s help following the difficult experience he endured with John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth).
Although Aaron did pick up that something was amiss with Robert; Vic kept quiet.
Robert is planning to see Kev later this week, but he has something unexpected happen with Aaron on Wednesday, October 1st, before that visit.

Aaron is upset when he remembers he forgot his late sister Grace’s birthday, and he apologises to his mum, Chas Dingle (played by Lucy Pargeter).
Chas has an honest and touching conversation with Aaron, which lifts his spirits and motivates him to find Robert.
What happens next is a surprising choice by the two of them, which complicates things for Robert. He now faces an even more difficult situation than he did previously – and he’s responsible for it himself.
Will Robert come clean to Aaron about Kev?
Given that Kev obviously has strong feelings for Robert and has shown he can be aggressive, what might happen if he discovers Robert and Aaron are a couple during his next day release?
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1. Stream on ITVX.
