Emmerdale sets up suspicious Robert Sugden’s role in Nate murder plot in ITVX release

Warning: This discussion may reveal plot details from the Emmerdale episode that aired on Monday, 21st July, which can be watched now on ITVX.

In the upcoming episode of Emmerdale on July 21, 2025, actor Ryan Hawley portrays Robert Sugden who finds himself once again entangled in his half-brother John’s (Oliver Farnworth) intricate web of deceit.

A week ago, John falsely accused Simon Haines of the murder he himself had carried out – the killing of Nate Robinson.

After discovering Owen unresponsive, John abandoned him and wrote both a confession and a suicide note on the man’s computer.

The next day on the ITV soap, it’s Doctor Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson) who unexpectedly finds the body during a routine welfare check, as John steps aside.

As a dedicated cinema enthusiast, I find myself in the shoes of Liam, who makes that crucial phone call to the authorities. Later on, DS Walsh presents me with an enigmatic letter, hinting at a significant revelation. The suspense builds as an officer pays a somber visit to Tracy (Amy Walsh), Nate’s heartbroken widow, and Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley), his grieving father. This visit marks the moment they receive the devastating news that we’ve finally identified Nate’s killer.

Tracy and Cain are deep into their own investigation over his death, and this news floors them.

As Robert acclimates once more to village life, a fleeting moment involving Eric Pollard (Chris Chittell) subtly hints at the village’s past.

But Robert’s concerns over the “odd” John are about to resurface.

In the operating room, I feign astonishment as Liam details the recent events, while at The Woolpack, I stand speechless upon learning that Owen, the man who drugged me not long ago, has tragically ended his life following the confession of his involvement in Nate’s murder.

You can watch this all unfold now on ITVX, or at 7.30pm on ITV1.

As a cinephile, I can tell you that when I catch sight of a detective exiting the surgery, my doubts about John are bound to escalate to unprecedented levels. And if I were to learn that John dropped by Owen’s residence just prior to his demise, well, let’s just say those suspicions would hit an all-time high.

Robert swiftly discovers irrefutable evidence showing that Owen could not have murdered Nate, so he makes his way to the police station instead.

Will he catch John out?
