Emmerdale star on Robert’s suspicions over scheming John and Nate’s murder: “He’s onto him”

Ryan Hawley recently opened up about the doubts harbored by his Emmerdale character, Robert Sugden, concerning his long-absent half-brother, John (played by Oliver Farnworth).

It’s more than accurate to state that the audience was overjoyed at the news of Robert’s permanent comeback on ITV soap; this is not merely due to his reunion with former spouse and heartthrob, Aaron Dingle (played by Danny Miller), but also because of the excitement his presence brings.

Aaron got married to John, yet he seems unaware of the harmful actions that stem from John’s distorted sense of being a savior.

Ever since his initial encounter with Robert, it seems John’s impending fall from grace is eagerly anticipated by Robert.

In this situation, when Robert gets angry, John unexpectedly enters the scene and manipulates the situation, making it seem as if Robert was the aggressor, rather than acknowledging Robert’s anger as a natural response. This action can be referred to as “John capitalizing on Robert’s anger to create confusion or doubt about who was actually behaving inappropriately.

The actor stated, “He claims that many of his actions are due to him being unpredictable and potentially harmful towards children, including Victoria. He combines these actions to create a portrait, effectively justifying his desire to eliminate Robert from the situation.

John seems particularly pleased as he adds more pain to Robert, who has just received a stern warning from their sister Victoria (Isabel Hodgins).

“He visits and rubs it in his face, because [Robert’s] at a real low point at this moment.”

Inquired about whether Robert was aware, just like the audience, that John was responsible for murdering Nate Robinson (Jurell Carter), Hawley affirmed: “Indeed, he has. All along, he’s had his suspicions about John and even has some proof.

In July, Robert connected the dots and rightfully deduced that the apparent confession to Nate’s murder, discovered under the alias of the deceased Owen Michaels (Simon Haines), was orchestrated by John.

“The last person to see Owen alive was John,” he recalled. “So he knows, he knows.

Additionally, it seems like it’s always John who shows up just when a hero needs help, and he believes this isn’t mere chance. He senses there might be something suspicious going on. He has his suspicions about him.

Sadly, Robert has encountered obstacles at every step in his attempt to expose John’s real character. Matters between Robert and John have escalated significantly, as Robert retaliated following John’s provocation.

Robert has faced roadblocks at each juncture in his endeavor to unmask John. The tension between them has grown substantially when Robert struck back after John made an aggressive move.

Although no blackmail threat has, as yet, been made, we know that John secretly has the upper hand.

Essentially, this footage acts as a game-changer. If he decides to show it to the police, proving that Robert struck him with a wrench, it could result in Robert returning to prison immediately.

It’s no wonder Robert buckles under the weight of recent events and suffers a breakdown.

We can’t wait for the instant when every villager, who has been praising John, finally sees the truth about him.

Upon learning about John’s secret, there’s a good chance he might resort to extreme measures to protect himself when confronted by Aaron.

If necessary, does Hawley believe that Robert would kill John to protect Aaron?

“Yeah, I think he could,” he mused.

In the past, he has unintentionally caused harm that resulted in the loss of life. His intentions weren’t malicious; rather, he acted in self-defense or out of rage, leading to these unfortunate outcomes, involving both Lee and Katie.

“So, could he? Yeah, but I don’t think he wants to.”
