Emmerdale star set for surprise exit – and has already filmed final scenes

Ray Walters has caused plenty of trouble in the Dales since he arrived earlier this year.

Joe Absolom, the actor who played Ray, is leaving Emmerdale, effectively ending the storyline of his villainous character.

Absolom, who previously starred in EastEnders, joined Emmerdale in July, but will be leaving soon. His final scenes have already been filmed, and The Sun reports they’ll air leading up to the special New Year’s episode where Emmerdale crosses over with Coronation Street.

As a big fan of Emmerdale, I heard from someone on the inside that the show’s writers always knew Joe wouldn’t be around forever. But they really maximized his time on the show and got a lot out of having such a talented actor join the cast. It’s a shame he’s leaving, but they definitely made his time worthwhile!

“He filmed his final scenes back in November.”

Ray has been the central antagonist in the recent county lines storyline. He’s been controlling Dylan Penders and April Windsor, and the situation has become increasingly disturbing, culminating in Ray forcing April into sex work.

He looks up to Celia, who he both fears and feels deeply connected to, almost like a mother figure. He generally acts like a child and always tries to please her.

I’ve noticed a real difference in how my character interacts with everyone. With Dylan and April, I feel like I’m often leading the way, really pushing things forward. But when I’m working with Celia, it’s totally different – she’s so strong and assertive, she definitely takes charge. It’s fun to play those contrasting dynamics.

Honestly, since I joined the show, things have been… eventful, to say the least. I’ve gotten involved in some really dark stuff – paying kids to move drugs, dealing myself, even exploiting others. But it hasn’t all been bad! I did teach Dylan how to drive, which is a good thing, and I think my arrival has really opened up a lot of new and dramatic possibilities for everyone in the Dales. It’s a real mix of everything, and I’m excited to see where things go!

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1. Stream on ITVX.
