It’s hard to believe it’s been thirty years since we said goodbye to the original Emmerdale Farm. I remember being so sad when the house, and all that beautiful land around it, had to be abandoned. Apparently, the ground was shifting underneath it – subsidence, they called it – and the Sugdens, the family at the heart of it all, had to relocate to Hawthorn Cottage nearby. It just wasn’t the same after that, you know?
Emmerdale has always remained connected to farming since its beginning. After the Sugdens briefly ran Melby Farm from 1997 to 2003, a new chapter began when a young Andy Sugden became the tenant farmer at Butlers Farm.
Although the farm has always been known as Emmerdale, previous owners, including Andy and his family, continued to refer to it as Butler’s Farm.
Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) has given up on his property, which is now fully owned by Joe Tate (Ned Porteous). He’ll be moving out in the next few weeks. A series of unfortunate events – including a possible tuberculosis outbreak that hurt meat sales and a costly slurry leak last year – have left him with no other choice.
Honestly, the whole situation with Cain and the farm was messy. He didn’t really have any legal right to the half of it that belonged to Moira, his wife, who’d been wrongly put in prison. She’s a good woman, though, and seeing how much he was struggling with his prostate cancer diagnosis, she made the tough decision to hand the farm over to Joe. She just wanted Cain to focus on getting better, you know?

Today on the show, the Dingle family was shocked to learn that Joe had secretly put Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) and Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) in charge as the new managers.
Emmerdale’s original family, the Sugdens, are back where they belong.
ITV has announced that the couple will be changing the name of Butlers to Emmerdale Farm. Aaron recently discovered the original sign buried on the property. While the original farmhouse is no longer standing, Robert will be continuing the legacy of his late father, Jack (Clive Hornby), by farming the same land.

After his sister Victoria moved to Spain to start a new life, Robert decided he wanted to rebuild the family’s reputation, hoping it would encourage her to return.
Producer Laura Shaw explained that the Sugdens are a foundational family in Emmerdale, having been the original farmers when the show began.
Returning to traditional farming methods feels significant, reminding us of the challenges faced by Annie Sugden and her sons, Jack and Joe, when they first worked the land. Now, her grandson Robert has taken over the farm and is determined to succeed and honor his father’s legacy. Alongside his dedicated partner Aaron, he’s eager to start this new chapter and ensure the farm prospers.

She finished by saying that farming continues to be a key part of Emmerdale, offering viewers both drama and a connection to the outdoors.
Okay, so everyone’s saying Robron are basically trying to get rid of Cain, but he’s not going down without a fight! I was so pleased to hear that things are looking up for him though – he’s been searching for a place to set up a new farm, and it sounds like his businesses are finally starting to do really well. It’s great news after everything!
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 8pm on ITV1. Stream on ITVX.
