There’s growing evidence suggesting we’re getting closer to understanding the highly anticipated crossover event between Coronation Street and Emmerdale. It appears a significant hint has emerged about what to expect.
The popular ITV soaps will feature a special, extended episode early in the new year to celebrate the updated soap schedule coming in 2026. However, those in charge are keeping the details under wraps, and haven’t revealed much about what viewers can anticipate.
Recently, on the Wednesday, September 24th, 2025 episode of Coronation Street, a significant clue appeared during the Asha Alahan (Tanisha Gorey) storyline at the police station. It was an Easter egg for soap opera fans: a wanted poster on the wall featured John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth), a notorious killer from Emmerdale.
Last September, the shocking truth about John’s actions in Emmerdale came to light. He attempted to kill both his husband, Aaron Dingle (played by Danny Miller), and his close friend Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb). It was also revealed that he was responsible for the death of Nate Robinson (Jurell Carter).

Even though John was finally unmasked as a murderer, and his rival and half-brother, Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley), was proven innocent, John is still on the run.
Having given up on seeking revenge against Robert, John pressured Caleb Miligan (William Ash) to assist his escape from the country. He threatened to reveal a secret: that Ruby Miligan (Beth Cordingly) had killed her abusive father, Anthony Fox, if Caleb didn’t comply.
Even though Caleb’s brother and Nate’s father, Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley), tried to stop him, Caleb managed to help John leave the country. However, Cain is still determined to track down the person responsible.
Now that John’s troublesome behavior is being acknowledged on Coronation Street, is it possible the murderer will reappear during the planned crossover event? A dramatic ending to this storyline would undoubtedly be a ratings success for both ITV soaps. It would certainly be explosive! Fans are eagerly anticipating what will happen next.
ITV explained that the special episode will tell a complete story on its own, but the dramatic events will have lasting effects on the characters and both soap operas. This will lead to some characters leaving and the introduction of new faces to both shows, permanently linking the two communities.
The channel is changing its programming schedule, and as part of those changes, both soaps will air for an hour each weekday starting at 8pm. They will each have half-hour episodes, meaning an hour will be dedicated to these two shows. This is a significant shake-up to the current schedule.
New episodes will still become available on the streaming platform ITVX at 7:00 AM, allowing viewers to watch them online ahead of the television broadcast, much like how BBC iPlayer releases episodes of EastEnders.
Coronation Street actor and Celebrity Big Brother 2025 winner Jack P. Shepherd has announced that he will be appearing in the special crossover episode.
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1. Stream on ITVX.
