Emmerdale’s John Sugden plans “Romeo and Julius” death plot against Robert and Kev in ITVX release

The story of Romeo and Juliet is a classic for a reason: a young couple falls in love, but their families are enemies. A misunderstanding leads to a tragic end, with both lovers taking their own lives.

Get ready for the Emmerdale take on “Romeo and Juliet,” written by the soap’s resident playwright, John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth). His version has a few twists, though.

Here’s a tricky idea: a boy befriends an inmate, while the husband of his girlfriend’s ex-wife seeks revenge and goes into hiding. When the inmate is released, he encounters the vengeful husband, who then shockingly demands he kill the boy and then commit suicide. It’s a complicated plot, and honestly, it’s easy to get lost in the details.

John is desperate to reconcile with Aaron Dingle and is willing to do whatever it takes to separate his brother, Robert, from Aaron’s life. At the same time, Robert’s husband, Kev, is hoping they can get back together too.

We found out on Christmas Day that Kev had been kidnapped and held captive in an abandoned house. Now, he’s being controlled by someone named John.

Aaron and Robert are completely unaware of the trouble heading their way. Kev already shot at them twice with a shotgun, but they were lucky enough to find cover both times. Plus, John’s return to the area will come as a total shock!

At the end of today’s episode, Kev felt sick, and John quickly tried to help, though with a hidden condition.

He said he’d only survived because he wanted to go back to the village, kill Robert, and then take his own life – mirroring the tragic fate of Romeo and Juliet. He believed this would create a chance for Aaron and John to reconcile and be together.

It’s a foolproof plan, right?

But will Kev go through with the dastardly deed?

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1. Stream on ITVX.
