Laurel Thomas, played by Charlotte Bellamy, is usually a very well-behaved character in Emmerdale, but things haven’t been going as smoothly for her lately, particularly over the past six months.
She unexpectedly became involved with Ray Walters (Joe Absolom), who was secretly a drug dealer and human trafficker, and she struggled with her feelings after he died.
Laurel believed the man was as trapped by his circumstances as those he held as slaves, but Marlon Dingle was furious and couldn’t accept that he had any redeeming qualities.
She’s had disagreements with her son, Arthur, about the relationship, and today, Paddy Dingle made some very critical remarks to her.

When she learned from Reverend Charles Anderson (Kevin Mathurin) that Ray’s funeral was scheduled, she went to the church to reflect. Upset that Ray was alone in the resting place, she asked Charles to check on him for her.
She discovered that Paddy didn’t want his father, Bear Wolf (Joshua Richards), to find out about the burial. He worried it would resurface painful memories of his own enslavement and the death of Ray.

As viewers may remember, Bear violently attacked Ray, choking him. He was released on bail after Paddy argued that Bear was acting in self-defense.
Okay, so here’s where things got tricky. Charles’ mom, Claudette – played wonderfully by Flo Wilson, by the way – accidentally let slip to Bear that Charles was taking Laurel to the funeral home. And honestly, I totally understood Bear’s reaction; he insisted on joining them, needing to be there to pay his respects. It created a really tense situation, and I was immediately invested in how it would play out.

Back at The Woolpack, Paddy angrily confronted Laurel, accusing her of acting irresponsibly. Laurel attempted to explain that she hadn’t been able to physically stop him, and that the situation had ultimately helped them both move forward.
Paddy refused to listen.
But will the day’s events have an adverse effect on Bear’s mental health?
