Emmerdale is set to reveal a surprising new detail about Robert Sugden‘s difficult time in prison, according to Ryan Hawley, who has hinted at a major twist in an upcoming flashback episode.
The upcoming special episode will reveal how Robert married Kev Townsend (played by Chris Coghill) while he was away from the show.
I discovered a really neat surprise while reading the script – something neither of us was aware of beforehand.

He recalled being surprised when he read it, saying he hadn’t known about that event and that it was incredibly important.
From what we’ve gathered, this episode contains hidden details and foreshadowing that viewers haven’t discovered yet, potentially setting up future storylines.
It’s great to revisit this past event and finally share the full story behind it. We were able to really develop and expand on the backstory, which was a lot of fun.
As for what this twist entails, we’ll of course just have to wait and see.
During a conversation with Hawley, Coghill shared a key idea behind the flashback-focused episode: it sheds light on why she behaves the way she does around Robert and what she anticipates from him.
There’s a key event that sets up a flashback episode, and that episode reveals a lot about how our relationship began.
Hawley said it was a worthwhile endeavor, noting that it’s very insightful and helps clarify the dynamic between the characters. He also praised the show’s strong scenes and enjoyable episodes.
He explained what viewers can look forward to, saying the episode will jump between different time periods, starting in 2021 and continuing right up to the moments before Aaron and John’s wedding.
“It’s at several different points throughout that time period.”

To show the passage of time, Hawley’s hairstyle was changed throughout the production.
They likely had a clear vision for how Robert should appear throughout the story, given it covers about five years. Because of that, he has a few different looks throughout the film.
“All me. It’s all me,” he laughed. “There’s no hair doubles or wigs. I do all my own hair!”
Hawley also revealed that the episode shares a theme seen in a previous Robert-centric special.
I’m not saying this to brag, but I’ve often found myself in a leading position during challenging situations.
The actor explained that this episode shares a similar theme with the one where their character was in a coma.
If we weren’t already filled with intrigue, we certainly are now!
