Warning: This discussion may reveal plot points from the Emmerdale episode that aired on July 18th, which can be watched on ITVX.
In the July 18, 2025 edition of Emmerdale, character John Sugden, played by Oliver Farnworth, devises a new plan to conceal his activities.
In the act of delivering a tribute for the deceased, Jurell Carter (Nate Robinson), John grappled with his sense of guilt, yet he remained unwilling to admit to any wrongdoing.
In the past, someone set up Tracy (played by Amy Walsh), Nate’s widow, by putting Nate’s phone in her home as a means of framing her. However, Tracy was convinced that it was Nate’s father, Cain Dingle (portrayed by Jeff Hordley), who had committed the murder of Nate.
Tensions came to a head at the funeral, where John appealed for a truce.
However, it wasn’t until Cain and Tracy stood together at Nate’s grave, with Cain’s behavior hinting at a scene from 2025, that they managed to reach mutual comprehension and acknowledged that they both recognized each other’s innocence.

Afterward, Tracy and Cain grew resolute on discovering who killed Nate, oblivious to the fact that he was hiding in plain sight among them.
After their proposal for assistance is declined, John proceeds with Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson) to the workplace, which is a medical clinic.
Or simpler:
John goes to work at the clinic with Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson) following their offer of help being turned down.
The conversation eventually centers around a specific individual, Owen (Simon Haines), who incidentally is the one who drugged Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) and was recently expelled from the clinic by John as well.
John goes to Owen’s house, and it has been officially revealed that he plans to make good use of this situation.
With Owen dead, the plot thickens when John writes a suicide note confessing to Nate’s murder.
You can watch this play out in full now on ITVX, or at 7.30pm on ITV1.
However, following his heinous act, John pretends to be surprised when Liam finds the dead body of Owen, and the police later disclose the incriminating letter.
Or simply: After committing a terrible deed, John acts shocked when Liam discovers the dead Owen and the police reveal the letter.
Both sentences convey the same meaning but with slightly different tones and structures.
Despite John’s well-executed plan, Cain strays from the path, leading to feelings of guilt in John, as he reflects on the tragic loss of a child and realizes that without the deceased scapegoat, Owen, there can be no justice for Nate.
As John seeks help from another hotline, there’s speculation about whether volunteer Paddy Dingle (Dominic Brunt) will expose his misdeeds. Meanwhile, Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) becomes increasingly wary of Owen’s supposed confession.
Following his encounter with Steve, Owen’s sibling, who clarified that Owen had an ironclad alibi regarding Nate’s demise, Robert subsequently communicates with the law enforcement officers.
Will the trail lead back to John?
