Emmy Nominations 2025: Beyoncé & Jay-Z Face Off in Same Category

Beyoncé and Jay-Z may have a slight family feud.

On that day, July 15th, both Mr. and Mrs. Carter managed to secure a nomination each in the Outstanding Variety Special (Live) category at the 2025 Emmy Awards.

In this instance, Beyoncé has been nominated for her performance at the Netflix NFL Halftime show, referred to as “Beyoncé Bowl”. Meanwhile, Jay-Z, in conjunction with Dave Free, received a nomination as executive producers for the Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show featuring Kendrick Lamar. The competitive category also includes nominations for events such as The Oscars, the 50th Anniversary Special of Saturday Night Live, and the Homecoming Concert version of SNL50.

In 2022, Jay-Z was the recipient of an award in that category for his involvement with the Apple Music Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show featuring Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kendrick, and 50 Cent on stage.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z, who tied the knot in 2008, will find out in September which of them has achieved more accolades this awards season. But, given their history of making memorable moments during award ceremonies, it’s nothing new for this power couple to share such historic milestones.

In November, the singer of “16 Carriages” equaled the rapper of “99 Problems” as the artist with the most Grammy nominations, receiving nine nods for “Cowboy Carter,” pushing her tally up to a total of 88 nominations.

In just a few short months, Beyoncé, mother of Blue (age 13), Rumi (age 5), and Sir (age 5) alongside Jay-Z, made history by becoming the most decorated musician ever, amassing a total of 35 awards during the February ceremony, surpassing her husband in this remarkable achievement.

In terms of his wife’s history at awards shows, Jay-Z has no qualms about speaking up for her. Before winning the Album of the Year Grammy for “Cowboy Carter”, Beyoncé had been denied the award five times in this category, which led Jay-Z to openly criticize the Recording Academy.

Jay-Z emphasized during his acceptance speech at the 2024 Grammy Awards for the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award: “It’s important that you all strive for accuracy, if not perfection—even in music, which is inherently subjective, it’s based on personal opinions. Yet, there are certain aspects I wouldn’t want to see misrepresented, such as this young lady who has won more Grammys than any other artist and yet hasn’t taken home the Album of the Year award.

He also pointed out, “Given your criteria, it doesn’t seem effective. Consider this: An artist with the most Grammy awards has never taken home the Album of the Year accolade. That seems unusual.

Although neither Jay-Z nor Beyoncé have publicly commented on the nomination, Roc Nation expressed their excitement for the halftime show and Kendrick’s achievements.

The July 15 Instagram post stated: “FOUR Emmy nominations for 2025. These were for the Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show featuring Kendrick Lamar in the categories of Outstanding Variety Special (Live), Outstanding Directing For a Variety Special, Outstanding Music Direction, and Choreography (Variety/Reality).”

The Instagram post from July 15 announced that the Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show with Kendrick Lamar received FOUR Emmy nominations. These were for categories such as Best Live Variety Special, Best Directing of a Variety Special, Best Music Direction, and Best Choreography (in the Variety/Reality genres).
