Ender’s Game and Big Brother Collide in Dark Horse’s Sci-Fi Odyssey Space Scouts

Dark Horse Comics and Flux House Books are joining forces to produce an extraordinary science fiction space adventure series, and it’s the result of one of comics’ most imaginative superstar teams. The upcoming series is called “Space Scouts“, and it originates from the exceptionally creative duo of writer Matt Kindt (known for works like “Ether“, “Gilt Frame“, “If You Find This“, “I’m Already Dead“) and artist/letterer David Rubin (known for works such as “Ether“, “Operation Sunrise“, “Cosmic Detective“), who have developed a series that can be likened to a blend of “Ender’s Game” and “Big Brother“.

In a unique blend like this, a broader stage is essential. Therefore, the comic book series Space Scouts will be presented in magazine-format issues (8″ x 10.875″) containing 32 pages each. Additionally, the series will offer extra content such as character designs and variant covers, crafted by Sergio Aragones, Brian Hurtt, and Alvaro Martinez Bueno. The series titled “Space Scouts” chronicles the journey of a young girl participating in a competition aimed at selecting the next astronaut. The show bears a resemblance to “Big Brother,” but it takes a drastically different turn when it’s unveiled that the winners will be thrust into a lethal conflict near the universe’s edge, and the chances of surviving are extremely minimal.

David and I have cherished the idea of “Space Scouts” for quite some time – it’s an opportunity to craft a narrative revolving around legions of teenage superheroes, tasked with safeguarding the universe,” said Kindt. “This allows us to unleash our imagination – from various superpowers and alien characters to a competition/reality show setting. As a lifelong enthusiast of the vibrant 1950s Superboy comic book covers, this project satisfies my creative inspiration.

Collaborating with David is an opportunity I would never pass up. He’s a remarkable talent who embodies creativity and vigor, making it an honor just to be active in the same period as him. Since Jack Kirby, there hasn’t been another visual artist as innovative and dynamic as David. Yet, he manages to maintain that wild energy without ever being repetitive – David truly stands out as a unique and original force.




Working with Matt feels akin to attending an unpredictable, thrilling bash; it’s enjoyable, full of unexpected twists, incredibly fun – but also challenging and difficult, as Rubin explained. Each collaboration with Matt offers me a chance to explore fresh artistic avenues, experiment with storytelling, and ultimately grow as an artist.
