Although zombie films are widely regarded as a popular horror subgenre, they’ve rarely achieved blockbuster status at the box office. Occasionally, there have been successful undead productions, like “Dawn of the Dead” and “Zombieland,” earning over $100 million worldwide. Yet, only one zombie film can truly be classified as a box-office smash, amassing over $500 million in 2013 and continuing to garner favor among fans since then. This iconic movie is now available on several streaming services, including a widely used free platform, making it more accessible than ever before.
Back in 2013, I was part of the audience who witnessed the release of “World War Z”, a zombie blockbuster starring Brad Pitt, in theaters. The movie, directed by Marc Forster, quickly became an enormous success, raking in over $540 million at the box office and setting a new benchmark for the genre as the biggest release ever. Now, with fans still clamoring for a sequel, “World War Z” has found its way onto various streaming platforms, including Hulu, Tubi, and Paramount+, making it easily accessible to audiences everywhere.
Paramount+ has been the primary platform where you can stream “World War Z”, given that it was a Paramount production. It’s also included in their ongoing horror series called Paramount Scares, specifically the Paramount Scares Vol. 2 4K collection. Although viewing the movie on Hulu might be thrilling for its subscribers, the significant news is that “World War Z” has now been added to Tubi’s selection. This means that you can watch this blockbuster movie for free, making it more accessible and potentially attracting a larger fan base, which could contribute to the argument for a sequel.
Is World War Z 2 Ever Happening?
Fans have been eagerly anticipating a second installment of “World War Z” since its initial release, given the movie’s impressive box office performance. However, the film’s substantial production budget and Brad Pitt’s hectic schedule made it challenging to bring the sequel into fruition right away. Consequently, the project never fully came together.
The sequel was first announced in 2015, initially with JA Bayona as the director and a screenplay from Steven Knight. However, these plans didn’t materialize. Later, it was intended for David Fincher, a frequent collaborator of Brad Pitt, to step in. Regrettably, neither of these scenarios came to fruition.
There’s a possibility that another movie in the World War Z series could happen. David Ellison, who was an executive producer on the original film and now heads the combined Paramount Skydance Corporation, has expressed interest in venturing into more horror productions. Recently, he specifically mentioned the sequel to World War Z as something still under consideration by the studio. After numerous setbacks, it remains to be seen if this project will finally move forward.
