Eric Dane isn’t saying goodbye to the camera yet.
A week after appearing on Brilliant Minds as a character with ALS, the actor – known for his role on Grey’s Anatomy – spoke about the importance of raising awareness for the disease, especially after publicly sharing his own diagnosis earlier in the year.
Eric shared that he feels driven to connect with others, explaining that his diagnosis has shifted his focus away from himself. Speaking at a recent online event for I AM ALS, he said he wishes his life could be solely about his own needs, but he believes finding purpose through helping others is what allows him to keep going. He described this sense of purpose as a powerful force in his life.
Despite focusing on his daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13, and his relationship with their mother, Rebecca Gayheart, he also feels strongly about raising awareness for ALS.
I want to raise awareness about ALS – what it is and, more importantly, how we can fight it and make things better for those affected,” the speaker explained. “Right now, navigating the challenges – the red tape and obstacles – is incredibly difficult. We need to cut through all that so we can start finding solutions.
The role of the firefighter resonated deeply with Eric, as the character’s difficulty accepting his medical diagnosis and asking for family support mirrored his own personal experiences.
It was really challenging to distance myself from the character because the emotions felt so new and genuine, he explained. He added that he’d never portrayed someone experiencing something he was going through at the same time in his own life.

It was tough to speak sometimes, but I’m really glad I went through it. It actually helped me process things and was surprisingly therapeutic.
The Euphoria actor understands that his career will keep evolving now that he’s overcome a rare, serious illness.
As an actor, I recognize my physical abilities are somewhat restricted, but I can still use my mind and voice. I’m open to any role, really. However, going forward, I plan to focus on projects related to ALS.
He admitted it would be a real challenge to take on any roles besides the one he’s known for, but expressed gratitude that he could still work in some way. He firmly stated he wouldn’t let his illness define him or take away his sense of purpose, and simply couldn’t see himself giving up.

Despite still experiencing physical challenges from ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, Eric finds strength in those challenges and uses them to keep him going.
He admitted he didn’t feel much like being cheerful, and understood why he might just want to stay in bed and cry for a couple of weeks. Surprisingly, though, he found he wasn’t the type to give in to that impulse, despite expecting he would be.
He shared that it gave him strength to realize he could face such a terrible situation with a positive attitude.

Eric Dane revealed he received a diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often called Lou Gehrig’s disease, in April 2025.
Dane shared with People magazine that he has been diagnosed with ALS. He expressed gratitude for the support of his family as they face this new challenge together.

Despite his recent diagnosis, the Euphoria actor confirmed he wasn’t retiring from acting. He announced in April 2025 that he was still filming the last season of the HBO show.
Dane, who recently starred in the Amazon MGM Studios series Countdown, shared that acting has helped him stay mentally focused while dealing with health challenges.
He told TopMob News in June 2025 that he generally feels good while at work. While there have been some challenges, he maintains a positive attitude, and that’s what’s most important to him.

Oh my gosh, it’s been two months since he first told us, and now he’s really opening up about everything! He’s talking about what it was like leading up to the diagnosis, all the things he was feeling… it’s just so brave of him to share his whole journey with us. I’m hanging on every word!
In a June 2025 interview with Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America, Dane shared that he first noticed weakness in his right hand. He didn’t think much of it initially, assuming it was from overuse or tiredness. However, a few weeks later, he realized the weakness was getting worse.
After nine months of doctor’s visits – seeing two hand specialists and two neurologists – Dane received a diagnosis of ALS.
The father of two said he’ll never forget receiving those three letters. They’re constantly on his mind, even when he first wakes up, and it feels all too real – not like a dream.

He explained how the rare disease has impacted his physical health and shared his expectations for how it will progress in the future.
Okay, so I was listening to the interview, and Dane just… completely broke my heart. He said his left side is still working, but his right side has just stopped. Like, completely. And it wasn’t said dramatically, it was just… matter-of-fact. Then he said, and I almost cried, that he thinks in a couple of months he might lose the use of his left hand too. He called it ‘sobering,’ and honestly? It was. It just really hit me how serious things are. I’m just… devastated for him.

I’ve been so worried about Dane and his health, but it’s been amazing to see his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, sticking by him. They actually filed for divorce back in 2018, but she dismissed the case in March, and she’s been a rock for him throughout this whole thing. It’s really heartwarming after over 20 years together.
Dane told Sawyer that he speaks with Rebecca daily. They’ve grown closer as friends and parents, and she’s his biggest advocate and a constant source of support. He relies on her a lot.
According to Gayheart, she and Dane are the “best of friends.”
Oh my gosh, you guys, I was screaming when I read this! Tori just told TopMob News that she and Dean are so close – she actually said they’re amazing co-parents! Can you believe it? She said they’ve finally cracked the code to staying a family, and honestly, it makes my heart burst knowing how good this is for their kids…and for them too! I’m seriously living for this positive energy!

Dane has been celebrating achievements with his daughters, Billie and Georgia, but he’s also shared that he struggles with how his ALS impacts his family.
The actor shared during an interview with GMA that he’s grappling with anger stemming from the loss of his father when he was a child. He expressed concern that his own daughters might experience a similar pain, as he now faces a situation that could separate him from them at a young age. Ultimately, he said he simply wants to be with his family and continue working when possible.

Dane was scheduled to present at the 2025 Emmys with his Grey’s Anatomy co-star, Jesse Williams, on September 14th, but he couldn’t make it. He later revealed that he had to miss the show due to a hospital stay a few weeks prior.
In an interview with The Washington Post published on October 2nd, he revealed he was in the hospital getting stitches while the Emmys were happening, explaining, “ALS is a terrible disease.”
“I was a really upset about it,” Dane added. “But you know, there was nothing I could do about it.”

I was so inspired to hear that Dane met with doctors and the amazing team at I Am ALS back in September 2025. He even had a chance to speak with Congressman Eric Swalwell about getting more federal funding for ALS research – it’s fantastic that he’s advocating for a cure for this devastating disease!
In a TikTok video posted on September 29th, Dane told Representative Swalwell, ‘I want to experience all of life’s milestones.’ He explained, ‘I have two daughters, and I hope to see them graduate from college, get married, and maybe even have children of their own.’
