Erin Bates is finally home with her little one.
Following the birth of her seventh child, Henry, Bringing Up Bates star’s husband recently shared news about her recovery after she was hospitalized due to complications.
Chad shared on Instagram that he was finally going home after nearly three weeks in the hospital, expressing how grateful he was to be reunited with his family, including his wife, Erin, and their baby, Henry. He mentioned they are still figuring things out and he hasnât regained full function in his right leg, but they are focusing on the positive and cherishing their time together.
He added, âYour prayers have carried us through and mean the world to our family.â
Erin, age 34, recently received a health update after experiencing a serious health crisis. About two weeks ago, her husband revealed she had a prolonged and severe seizure and was hospitalized in the ICU. This occurred after she developed a severe urinary tract infection and kidney infection, which quickly led to septic shock following the birth of her child.
“Up to this point, Erins infection was getting better, but we found ourselves back in a place of heartache, uncertainty, and tears,” Chadâwho also shares kids Carson, 10, Brooklyn, 8, Everly, 7, Holland, 5, Finley, 3, William, 22 months, with Erinâwrote on Instagram Sept. 4. “The doctors are running scans and tests to determine the cause. Erin is extremely weak and spent hours only half conscious.”
Watching my wife struggle has been incredibly difficult – one of the hardest experiences of my life. It’s heartbreaking to feel so powerless to help her pain. I love her more than anything, and the thought of losing my best friend is unimaginable.
Since then, Erinâs parents, Gil and Kathy Bates, have talked about the many difficulties and unclear medical diagnoses that came afterward.
We’ve been reluctant to post updates because Erin’s health hasn’t been straightforward. She’d start to recover from one issue, only to develop a new one. Doctors have run many tests, but haven’t been able to pinpoint exactly what’s wrong, and with her condition constantly changing, it’s been difficult to keep everyone informed.
As a parent myself, I can only imagine the rollercoaster of emotions that comes with raising a large family! These parents of nineteen children recently shared that they’ve experienced everything – joyful moments, tough times, and everything in between. But through it all, theyâve consistently felt incredibly grateful for the constant love and support they’ve received. Itâs a beautiful reminder that even amidst the chaos, love truly shines through.
While Erin was in the hospital, family and friends stepped in to help care for baby Henry.
Chad shared on Instagram on September 12th that they’ve been deeply touched by the incredible support from family and friends during a challenging time. He posted a photo of his son, Henry, with a breathing tube, and explained how people have helped by watching the kids, taking them on fun outings, and caring for baby Henry, as well as offering encouragement to his wife, Erin. He said their support has been invaluable and hard to fully express.

William âGilâ Bates, a wrestling champion from South Carolina, met his future wife, Kelly Callaham, while both were students at Anderson University. Kelly was tutoring Gil in Chemistry when they began dating. They got engaged in October 1987 while finishing their studies at Carson-Newman University in Tennessee, and married just two months later. The couple didn’t plan to have a large family, and didn’t use birth control, choosing instead to leave the number of children up to God. Gil told *Dateline* in 2011 that they initially expected to have only two or three children.
The couple’s oldest son, Zachary Bates, was born shortly after their wedding, and their 19th child, Jeb Bates, arrived in 2012. When it comes to remembering all their childrenâs names, Kelly jokes that her husband, Gil, who owns Bates Tree Service, has a better memory than she does.
Zachary, born on December 30, 1988, was homeschooled along with his siblings and studied with Bill Gothardâs Institute in Basic Life Principles. While his early courtship with Sarah Reith was featured on *19 Kids and Counting*, he eventually married Whitney Perkins, whom he met while she worked as a carhop at Sonic. They began courting in 2013 and were married that December, with John-David Duggar as one of the groomsmen. Together, they have six children: sons Bradley (born October 2014) and Jayden (born June 2021), and daughters Kaci (born June 2016), KhloĂ© (born November 2019), and Lily Jo (born August 2023).
Besides his work with the family history company, Zachary has also been a police officer, a county commissioner, and a real estate agent.
Born on January 23, 1990, just thirteen months after her brother, Michaela Bates Keilen developed a knack for sewing at a young age, often making dresses for her family and helping with the laundry. She and her future husband, Brandon Keilen, dated for two years before he could propose – waiting until he finished bible college – and got engaged in April 2015.
After getting married in Chicago that August, the couple faced difficulties trying to have a family. Michaela openly shared their fertility journey through her blog and YouTube channel. Following a miscarriage in 2021, they began fostering two young boys.
Erin Bates Pain, born on May 2, 1991, shared with *People* magazine that she has only positive memories of how her parents raised her. She said looking back, her childhood was filled with wonderful experiences and happy memories.
Growing up without a TV wasnât a loss, she explained. Instead, her family spent that time playing with their dad, enjoying games together, and creating lasting memories. She believes this actually made them more resourceful and intelligent.
After marrying Charles âChadâ Paine III in 2013, Erin and Chad were excited to start a large family. Unfortunately, a blood clotting disorder caused several miscarriages before they welcomed their first child, Carson, in May 2015. They went on to have Brooklyn (August 2016), Everly (May 2018), Holland (November 2019), and Finley (January 2022). Despite believing they couldnât have any more children, their family continued to grow with William (October 2023) and Henry (August 2025). Following Henryâs birth, Erin experienced septic shock, and Chad shared on Instagram, asking for prayers for her recovery from the complications.

They married in October of that year, continuing a family tradition of sharing their first kiss at the wedding ceremony. Nathan and Esther welcomed their daughter, Kenna, in 2022, and their son, Graham, in October 2024. From a young age, Nathan has felt called to ministry and has pursued this through mission trips and work as a first responder.

The couple, who live in Florida, have five children: Alli (born April 2015), Lexi (born January 2017), Zoey (born March 2018), Maci (born February 2021), and Rhett (born March 2023).
I’ve been following the Bates family for years, and it’s been so lovely to watch Tori’s life unfold! Born just a year after her sister in December 1995, Tori and Bobby Smith started dating in 2016 – we got to see their sweet romance play out on the show. They didn’t waste any time! Oh my gosh, Jackson Bates! He’s one of the famous Bates brothers – along with Warden and Isaiah, of course! He came into the world on February 17th, 2002, and it was destiny when he met Emerson Wells at a rodeo in Florida! I nearly screamed when they announced their engagement in March 2023, and the wedding in October was *amazing* – Jason Duggar was even a groomsman! And then, the sweetest news ever: baby David arrived in July 2025. I’ve been following their story forever, and it’s just so perfect!
Born on May 19, 2003, Warden is known for his energetic personality – earning him the nickname âTigger.â He enjoys playing sports and singing, and has balanced these hobbies with work at both his dadâs excavating company and Paine Construction, where his brother-in-law, Chad, works.
The third member of the team joined on October 16, 2004. After graduating from Crown College in 2023 with a certificate in Christian foundations, and working for his father and brother-in-law Chad, he started his own lawn care company in 2022.

I’ve been a fan of Ellie Bates for years! Her name actually means ‘strong light,’ which is so fitting. She first became part of the family crew back on April 28, 2007, and she’s frequently featured in the beautiful photos for the Bates Sisters Boutique – she really brings their style to life.

The Bates family grew with the arrival of Jeb Bates on February 1, 2012. He needed some time in the NICU after he was born. Gil Bates told *People* magazine that even after having nineteen children, he was just as excited and nervous about Jebâs arrival as he was with their first child.
