Erin Bates Paine is on the mend.
The star of the show “Bringing Up Bates” has been moved to a different hospital due to post-birth complications, as reported by her husband Chad Paine.
He shared on Instagram on September 9 that recovery isn’t swift or simple, but each small progress is deeply appreciated. Witnessing Erin struggle through her pain has been heart-wrenching, but observing her lifting her voice in praise to the Lord amidst it all has been truly inspiring.
Chad commended Erin’s kindness and gratitude towards those caring for her, mentioning that she consistently shines as a beacon of light in their family, consisting of Carson (10), Brooklyn (8), Everly (7), Holland (5), Finley (3), William (22 months), and the newest addition Henry (2 weeks).
Currently, Chad observed that a fresh group of doctors have been collaborating to aid in her recovery, after she was diagnosed with septic shock.
In his words, the nurse’s kindness has felt akin to a loving family, and he emphasized that he and Erin deeply miss their children beyond what language can express while they journey through this healing process together.
On August 25th, during the birth of her youngest son Henry, Erin experienced a prolonged and particularly intense labor, as reported by Chad.
In a September 1st Instagram post, it was mentioned that Erin had a serious urinary tract infection and kidney infection, causing her to experience septic shock.
The 34-year-old was admitted to the ICU, where Chad said she “spent hours only half conscious.”
Speaking at that moment, he said it was one of the toughest challenges for him – to be beside his wife as she fights, feeling utterly powerless to alleviate her pain. He further expressed that his love for her transcends what words can convey, and he simply cannot fathom life without her, whom he considers his dearest friend.

William Gilvin “Gil” Bates, the wrestling champion of South Carolina, encountered lab assistant Kelly Bates (maiden name Callaham) at Anderson University, a Christian liberal arts school in South Carolina, where she was assigned to tutor him in Chemistry. Displaying an abundance of intellect, he proposed to her in October 1987, as they were nearing the completion of their studies at Carson-Newman University in Tennessee. They tied the knot only two months later, initially not planning on having a big family. However, neither of them were in favor of birth control. As Gil shared with Dateline in 2011, they chose to rely on faith when it came to the number of children they’d have, assuming they would limit their brood to two or three.
The oldest child, Zachary Bates, was born a year after their wedding, making him the 19th child in total. Their son Jeb Bates joined the family in 2012. When it comes to listing off all their many children, Kelly humorously remarked that Gil, who operates the excavating company Bates Tree Service, is particularly good at remembering names, as he has a better memory than hers.
Similarly to his other siblings, Zachary, born on December 30, 1988, received homeschooling and was an attentive pupil at Bill Gothard’s Institute in Basic Life Principles. His relationship with Sarah Reith was showcased on the series “19 Kids and Counting,” but it was Whitney Perkins who won his affection while working at Sonic Drive-in. They began courting in 2013, and just two months later, he proposed. John-David Duggar served as one of the groomsmen at their wedding, which took place that December. Over time, they expanded their family with sons Bradley (born October 2014), Jayden (June 2021), daughters Kaci (June 2016), Khloé (November 2019) and Lily Jo (August 2023).
Apart from his work at the family tree company, Zachary has also held roles such as a police officer, a county commissioner, and a real estate agent.
On January 23, 1990, Michaela Bates Keilen was born, about 13 months after her older brother. As a young girl, she developed the skill of sewing and made many of the family’s dresses, as well as managing the laundry. Brandon Keilen couldn’t propose until he had graduated from bible college, so they dated for two years before becoming engaged in April 2015.
In the wake of their August wedding, the couple found themselves setting up life in Chicago. Establishing a family proved challenging, with Michaela penning about her fertility issues on her blog and YouTube channel. Following a heart-wrenching miscarriage in 2021, they embarked upon becoming foster parents for two young lads instead.
Reflecting on my upbringing by my parents, I can’t recall any experiences that were harmful or negative, Erin Bates Pain shared with People magazine. Instead, when I look back, it’s all extremely positive, and we created some unforgettable moments together.
Instead of having a television, we used playtime with dad as an alternative, creating family games or making memories together. In essence, I never felt we were missing out and may have even become wiser due to this choice.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but share the joyful journey of my favorite couple – the charming Charles “Chad” Stephen Paine III and his lovely wife, Erin. After tying the knot in 2013, they couldn’t wait to expand their family into a bundle of love. However, a blood clotting disorder cast a shadow over their dreams, causing several heartbreaking miscarriages.
But fate had other plans! In May 2015, Carson arrived, bringing sunshine back into their lives. Brooklyn followed suit in August 2016, Everly in May 2018, Holland in November 2019, and sweet Finley in January 2022. Just when it seemed their family was complete, the universe had another surprise in store – William joined them in October 2023 and Henry arrived in August 2025!
However, their happiness was briefly disrupted when Erin went through a severe health scare following Henry’s birth, leading to septic shock. Chad took to Instagram to express his heartfelt request for everyone’s prayers as Erin fought bravely to recover from the complications she faced.
At the tender age of 13, Lawson Bates (born on July 27, 1992) launched his own lawn-maintenance business known as Lawson’s Lawncare. Subsequently, he was rumored to be connected with Jana Duggar following some interactions on her Instagram posts. However, he later announced his engagement to Tiffany Espensen, after proposing during a trip to Italy in October 2021. Reflecting on their relationship, the singer-songwriter shared with People magazine that discovering Tiffany’s character, interests, and aspirations has been the most delightful aspect of his life, and they have been creating beautiful memories together over the past year.
In May 2022, the couple got married aboard a yacht near San Diego’s coast. Unfortunately, they had a miscarriage before their son William was born in July 2024. Shortly after, they announced that they were expecting another child by the end of the following year.
Nathan Bates, also known as Kenneth Nathaniel “Nathan” Bates, joined the family on August 29, 1993. His romance with Ashley Salyer was showcased on ‘Bringing Up Bates’, but he later got engaged to Esther Keyes in May 2021. They tied the knot in October of the same year (sharing their first kiss at the altar, similar to many of his siblings). A daughter named Kenna was born to them a year later, and their son Graham arrived in October 2024. With a desire to become a preacher from a young age, he has served by going on various mission trips and working as a first responder.
Alyssa Bates Webster, born on November 9, 1994, served as the family’s secretary, shopper for clothes, and prepared many meals. She crossed paths with Daniel Webster’s son, John Webster, during his campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives. They announced their engagement in January 2014 (their engagement party was held at Orlando’s Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse) and got married that May. The couple residing in Florida welcomed daughter Alli in April 2015, Lexi in January 2017, Zoey in March 2018, Maci in February 2021, and son Rhett in March 2023.
Tori Bates Smith, who was born twelve months after her older sister on December 20, 1995, started dating Bobby Smith in the year 2016. Their relationship was showcased on their family’s reality series. After getting engaged, they got married in December 2017. Tori, who graduated from Crown College of the Bible with a focus on elementary education, and Bobby went on to have son Robert IV in November 2018, followed by son Kolter in May 2020, daughter Charlotte in June 2021, daughter Cambree in August 2022, and son Weston in May 2024.
Born on February 1, 1997, Trace Bates, who is named after a harvester of white fields, met his future wife Lydia Romeike through his sister Josie Bates Balka. They publicly announced their engagement in March 2022 on YouTube, where Trace shared fondly, “Lydia is my best friend and the most positive influence in my life.” The couple married in October 2022 before an audience of 350 guests, including Jason Duggar who served as an usher. Their first son, Ryker, came along in October 2023, followed by their rainbow baby, daughter Kaia, who arrived in June 2025.
Carlin Bates Stewart was born on April 11, 1998. Along with her brother Trace, she graduated from high school after taking college courses simultaneously. Her sister Erin set them up, and Carlin began dating Evan Stewart. The couple went public with their engagement in September 2018. They married the following May, with Joy-Anna Duggar Forsyth serving as a bridesmaid. Their first child, daughter Layla, was born in January 2020, and this event was documented on ‘Bringing Up Bates’. Their son Zade arrived in March 2022. The couple announced they were expecting their third child in February 2025.
Gil and Kelly welcomed their tenth child on August 4, 1999. She later met her future spouse, Kelton Balka, at a piano recital in 2014; however, it wasn’t until 2017 that they started dating. Their engagement was in June 2018, and the proposal was captured on film. They got married that October with cameras present as well. Willow was born in July 2019, followed by Hazel in June 2021. Miles came along in February 2024, and in April 2025, they announced another addition to their family, which is expected.
Katie Bates Clark, who arrived on October 5, 2000, was given the name that signifies unadulterated elegance. In a 2019 Facebook Live broadcast, she disclosed her relationship with Travis Clark and shared details of their oceanfront engagement in April 2021. Tying the knot in December of the same year, they went on to expand their family, welcoming daughter Hailey in February 2023 and son Harvey in September 2024. Equipped with a cosmetology license after graduating from The Crown College, Katie Bates Clark has been employed as a stylist for her sister Josie’s company, Effortless Beauty, and as a model for Bates Sisters Boutique.
Among the group often referred to as the three musketeers, which includes Warden Bates and Isaiah Bates, Jackson Bates entered the world on February 17, 2002. He encountered his future spouse, Emerson Wells, at a rodeo in Florida, and they announced their engagement in March 2023. Tying the knot that October (with Jason Duggar serving as a groomsman), they welcomed their son David into their family in July 2025.
Known affectionately as “Tigger” because of his lively personality, Warden (born on May 19, 2003), has a passion for sports and singing. He skillfully balances his work commitments between his father’s excavation company and brother-in-law Chad’s Paine Construction firm.
On October 16, 2004, the third musketeer made his appearance. Having worked for both his father and his brother-in-law Chad, the graduate of Crown College (obtaining his one-year Bible Certificate in Foundation of Christian Life in 2023) launched his own lawn care company in the year 2022.
As a dedicated follower, I’d like to share my story that begins on February 17, 2006, the day Addalee Bates entered the world prematurely. In the NICU, I faced breathing challenges due to my early arrival and had to rely on hearing aids. My parents, in their compassionate wisdom, decided to add extra letters to my name as a symbol of my second chance at life. Fast forward to 2025, I successfully completed a one-year bible program, a testament to the strength and resilience that life has instilled within me.
Under the moniker “Strong Light,” Ellie Bates embarked on her journey with the team on April 28, 2007. Frequently, she strikes a pose for snapshots used by Bates Sisters Boutique in their photo sessions.
Among Gil and Kelly’s daughters, it was Callie-Anna Bates who made her entry into the world on August 2, 2009. Known for her lively spirit, as Kelly described her on Instagram in August 2020, “You attract people like a magnet!
Ever since Jud Bates arrived on Sept. 15, 2010, he’s been growing at an astonishing pace, as Kelly mentioned in her December 2020 Instagram post. Despite some hurdles along the way, he has suffered two broken right collarbones – one from playing football and another while riding his e-bike.
With his family now complete, Jeb Bates made his entrance into the world on February 1, 2012 and required a brief stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). “One might think that after having 19 children, you wouldn’t feel excited or anxious,” Gil confided to People at the time. “However, I was just as nervous with this baby as I was with our first.
