Erin Bates is recovering from a terrifying health crisis.
Following the delivery of their seventh child, Henry, the star of the show “Bringing Up Bates” experienced postnatal complications. Chad Paine, her husband, later provided an update on her well-being.
I’m filled with heartfelt gratitude as I journey towards healing, tears streaming down my face. I took to Instagram on September 6th, sharing a heartwarming video of me bonding with my little one after wakefulness. The love and prayers you all sent have undoubtedly reached the heavens.”
– Chad
The latest news on Erin, aged 34, reveals that she endured a prolonged and intense seizure followed by a hospitalization in the ICU due to a severe urinary tract infection and kidney infection. These complications led her into septic shock, occurring shortly after childbirth. Her husband announced this news just two days ago.
At this stage, Erin’s recovery was progressing well, but we found ourselves back in a tough spot filled with sorrow, doubt, and tears. Chad, who shares children Carson (10), Brooklyn (8), Everly (7), Holland (5), Finley (3), William (22 months) with Erin, posted on Instagram September 4. The doctors are conducting scans and tests to understand the root cause. Erin is currently very weak and has spent extended periods barely conscious.
Being her husband has been one of the most challenging experiences for me – watching her fight, feeling utterly powerless to alleviate her pain. My love for her is beyond what language can capture, and the thought of a life without my closest companion is almost unbearable.
With Chad joined by several of the reality star’s other 18 siblings, they all gathered to offer their support for Erin during her stay in the hospital.
Michaela Bates Keilen, Erin’s older sister, expressed that she and her family were deeply touched by the abundant displays of love, care, and prayers they received, as evidenced by a shared photo of Henry in their arms.
I wanted to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who has prayed for my sister Erin and her family lately. Although I haven’t had a chance to reply to each message individually, please understand that every comment, text, and message has reached our hearts profoundly, and we are truly thankful.
Michaela stated about Erin’s newborn son Henry, “He’s a heaven-sent little angel, and we’re utterly smitten by him.
In the comments, Whitney Bates (married to Zachary Bates, Erin’s older brother) expressed that they are sending Erin their ongoing affection and are fervently praying for her wellbeing.
Simultaneously, some of Erin’s other brothers and sisters showed their backing for Erin and Chad during his September 4th post about Erin’s well-being.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d rephrase that in a more personal and conversational manner like this: “I, much like my sister Katie Bates Clark, am sending heartfelt prayers together with my spouse, Travis Clark. Similarly, my brother Lawson Bates and his wife Tiffany Espensen are consistently holding daily prayers for a remarkable healing.

William Gilvin “Gil” Bates, champion wrestler of South Carolina, encountered lab assistant Kelly Bates (formerly Callaham) at Anderson University, a Christian liberal arts school in South Carolina, where she was helping him with Chemistry studies. In October 1987, during their final years at Carson-Newman University in Tennessee, they demonstrated their shared wisdom by getting engaged. They tied the knot only two months later, and initially didn’t anticipate having a big family. However, they didn’t advocate for birth control and instead decided to entrust the number of children they would have to God. Gil confessed in an interview with Dateline in 2011 that they believed their family might grow to include two or three children at most.
The oldest child, Zachary Bates, was born a year after their wedding; their 19th child, another son named Jeb Bates, came along in 2012. As for listing off the names of their large family, Kelly quipped about Gil (the owner of Bates Tree Service), “Daddy’s great at that. His memory is better than mine.”
Growing up similarly to my siblings, I was homeschooled and a diligent student under Bill Gothard’s Institute in Basic Life Principles, born on the 30th of December, 1988. My romantic journey with Sarah Reith, which was showcased on 19 Kids and Counting, took a backseat when it was my future wife, Whitney Perkins, who stirred emotions within me while working at Sonic. We began courting in 2013, and just two months into our relationship, I found myself proposing to her. We tied the knot in December of the same year, with my brother John-David Duggar standing by my side as one of the groomsmen. Since then, we have been blessed with sons Bradley, Jayden, and daughters Kaci, Khloé, and most recently, Lily Jo. (John-David Duggar served as one of the groomsmen. The couple went on to welcome sons Bradley in October 2014, Jayden in June 2021, daughters Kaci in June 2016, Khloé in November 2019, and most recently, Lily Jo in August 2023.)
Apart from running the family tree company, Zachary has also held roles as a law enforcement officer, a county representative, and a real estate broker.
Born on January 23, 1990, approximately thirteen months after her elder brother, Michaela Bates Keilen discovered the art of sewing during her childhood years. She crafted many dresses for her family and managed the household laundry as well. Brandon Keilen, her future spouse, was unable to propose until he had completed his education at bible college. Consequently, they dated for a period of two years before their engagement in April 2015.
After their August wedding, the couple moved to Chicago where they faced difficulties in starting a family. Michaela shared her fertility challenges in various blog entries and YouTube videos. Heartbreakingly, they experienced a miscarriage in 2021, but later became foster parents to two young boys.
Erin Bates Pain shared with People magazine that when reflecting on her childhood and how her parents brought her up, she can’t find anything negative. Instead, she recalls only positives and cherished moments. (Erin Bates Pain joined them on May 2, 1991)
Instead of having a television, we used that time for quality moments with dad, such as family games or memory-making activities. Consequently, I never felt deprived and may even have become wiser due to the experience.
After marrying Charles “Chad” Stephen Paine III in 2013, they eagerly looked forward to starting a large family of their own. However, due to a blood clotting disorder, they experienced several miscarriages before welcoming Carson in May 2015, Brooklyn in August 2016, Everly in May 2018, Holland in November 2019, and Finley in January 2022. Despite initially thinking they couldn’t have more children, they expanded their family with William in October 2023 and Henry in August 2025. Following Henry’s delivery, Erin developed sepsis, and Chad posted on Instagram, asking for prayers for Erin as she recovers from the complications that arose.
Lawson Bates, a young entrepreneur who launched his own lawn-care business, Lawson’s Lawncare, at the age of 13, was connected to Jana Duggar following some comments he made on her Instagram posts. However, he later announced his engagement to Tiffany Espensen after proposing during an October 2021 trip to Italy. In an interview with People, the singer-songwriter expressed that getting to know Tiffany, with her kind heart, shared passions, and dreams, had brought him immense joy over the past year, and they have been creating many cherished memories together.
In May 2022, the couple got married on a yacht near San Diego’s coast. Unfortunately, they experienced a miscarriage that same year before welcoming their son, William, in July 2024. Just under a year later, they announced that they were expecting another child.
Nathan Bates, affectionately known as Kenneth Nathaniel “Nathan”, joined our family on August 29, 1993. While his courtship with Ashley Salyer was documented in the show Bringing Up Bates, he later became engaged to Esther Keyes in May 2021. They tied the knot in October of the same year, exchanging their first kiss at the altar like many of his siblings. A year after their wedding, they were blessed with a daughter named Kenna. Their son Graham was born in October 2024. With a desire to become a preacher from an early age, Nathan has served this calling through various mission trips and working as a first responder.

12 months younger than her elder sister, Tori Bates Smith was born on December 20, 1995. In the year 2016, she started dating Bobby Smith, a relationship that was showcased in their family’s reality series. They got married shortly after their engagement, tying the knot in December 2017. Tori, who graduated from Crown College of the Bible with a focus on elementary education, and Bobby had their first child, Robert IV, in November 2018. Her sister Erin facilitated the introduction between Carlin and Evan Stewart, who became engaged publicly in September 2018. Their wedding took place in May of the following year, with Joy-Anna Duggar Forsyth serving as one of the bridesmaids. The couple’s first child, Layla, was born in January 2020 and documented on the show “Bringing Up Bates”. Their second child, Zade, entered the world in March 2022, and they announced the upcoming arrival of their third child in February 2025.
In my expert opinion as a lifestyle enthusiast, let me share a captivating tale from the life of a remarkable couple. Back in August 1999, their 10th child made her grand entrance into the world. Fate would bring them together with Kelton Balka at a piano recital in 2014, but it wasn’t until 2017 that their story truly began to unfold.
Fast forward to June 2018, and a heartwarming on-camera proposal marked the beginning of their beautiful journey towards matrimony. They exchanged vows later that year under the watchful eye of the cameras. Life took a sweet turn with the arrival of their daughter Willow in July 2019, followed by Hazel in June 2021. The family grew further when son Miles joined them in February 2024, and they delightfully announced another addition to their brood in April 2025.
This vibrant family continues to expand, creating a beautiful symphony of love and togetherness that resonates with many.
On October 5th, 2000, Katie Bates Clark, whose name symbolizes pure grace, made her appearance. In a 2019 Facebook Live session, she disclosed her relationship with Travis Clark and shared details of their engagement by the ocean in April 2021. Tying the knot in December of the same year, they welcomed their first child, Hailey, in February 2023, followed by the arrival of their son, Harvey, in September 2024. Holding a cosmetology license from The Crown College, Katie Bates Clark has been working as a stylist for her sister Josie’s business, Effortless Beauty, and serving as a model for Bates Sisters Boutique.

At a rodeo in Florida, he crossed paths with his future wife, Emerson Wells, with their engagement being announced in March 2023. They tied the knot that October, and Jason Duggar served as a groomsman. Their first child, David, arrived in July 2025.
Known as “Tigger” for his lively spirit, Warden, born on May 19, 2003, enjoys playing sports and singing. He manages to balance his work commitments between his father’s excavation company and his brother-in-law Chad’s Paine Construction firm.
On October 16, 2004, the third musketeer made his arrival. A graduate of The Crown College, where he earned a one-year Bible certificate focusing on Foundations of Christian Life in 2023, he launched his own lawn care business in 2022 while working alongside both his father and brother-in-law Chad.
Ever since Addalee Bates graced this world on February 17, 2006, I’ve been an ardent follower of her incredible journey. Born prematurely, she battled breathing difficulties and hearing issues, but these challenges only served to strengthen her resilience. Her loving parents added additional letters to her name as a constant reminder of the second chance at life they were blessed with. Fast forward to 2025, Addalee triumphantly completed her one-year bible program – another milestone in this inspiring tale of strength and determination.
Hailing under the moniker that symbolizes a powerful beacon, Ellie Bates signed up with the team on April 28, 2007. Frequently, she’s captured for photoshoots at the Bates Sisters Boutique.
Callie-Anna Bates, the youngest among Gil and Kelly’s daughters, was born on August 2, 2009. Known for her lively spirit, as described by Kelly on Instagram in August 2020, “You have a magnetic charm that draws people to you!
Ever since Jud Bates came on September 15, 2010, he’s experienced rapid development, as mentioned in Kelly’s Instagram post from December 2020. Despite encountering a couple of difficulties, he fractured his right collarbone on two occasions – the first time during a football game and the second while riding his e-bike.
With the expansion of his family, Jeb Bates entered the world on February 1, 2012, requiring some additional care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Despite already having 18 other children, Gil expressed to People magazine that he was just as excited and anxious with this new arrival as he had been with their first child.
