In a fresh move, the highly anticipated sequel of the classic zombie movie, starring Jeremy Renner and Idris Elba, is set to debut on a different streaming platform. The 2007 post-apocalyptic hit, titled “28 Weeks Later“, will be available for viewing soon.

28 Weeks Later, a movie owned by Disney and available on Hulu from June 1st, will make its debut. You can also stream it on Disney+, or rent or buy it through Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and YouTube. This film is a sequel to Danny Boyle’s, featuring the Academy Award-winning actor Cillian Murphy. In 28 Weeks Later, six months after a Rage Virus outbreak that caused a zombie apocalypse, a family and a nation work towards rebuilding.

In the separate follow-up storyline, we find NATO attempting to create a secure area within London following the devastating events of the first movie which left the British Isles’ population nearly extinct. As refugees start returning to Britain, it appears that the crisis has passed. However, shockingly, the virus resurfaces, proving even deadlier than before. This grim post-apocalyptic thriller features Jeremy Renner as Delta Force sniper Doyle and Idris Elba as U.S. general Stone supervising one of the safe zones. The sequel boasts an impressive cast including Robert Carlyle, Rose Byrne, and Harold Perrineau.

28 Weeks Later Led To More Sequels

Under the guidance of Academy Award-nominated director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, 28 Weeks Later proved to be a commendable sequel to 28 Days Later, receiving a 72% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and grossing $65.8 million globally against its $15 million production cost. Although another sequel was announced in 2007, the progress of the subsequent film’s development, , was confirmed in early 2024, with Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland of 28 Days Later set to return.

As a die-hard film enthusiast, I’m eagerly anticipating the journey of Danny Boyle’s trilogy, starting with “28 Years Later.” The second installment, titled “The Bone Temple,” is helmed by Nia DaCosta, and an as-yet-untitled third movie will follow. Interestingly, Danny Boyle will only be directing the first of these “28 Days Later” films, while Alex Garland wrote both the screenplay for “28 Days Later” and “The Bone Temple.” Boyle and Garland chose not to return for the later projects due to reasons they’ve hinted at but not explicitly stated.

28 Years After is set 28 years following the Rage Virus pandemic, focusing on a family residing on an isolated island linked to the mainland by a fortified bridge. The story unfolds as the head of the family, Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), and his son Spike (Alfie Williams) venture onto the mainland for a mission, where they uncover hidden truths and confront the chilling realities of the world beyond their sanctuary.

In the film, I’m thrilled to see Jodie Comer portray Jamie’s partner Isla, and Ralph Fiennes as Dr. Kelson, a survivor of the outbreak. Jack O’Connell takes on an intriguing role as Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal, a cult leader. However, I must clarify that Cillian Murphy won’t be reprising his role from 28 Days Later in the upcoming sequel titled 28 Years Later.

Starting June 1, you can stream “28 Weeks Later” on Hulu, and “28 Years Later” hits theaters on June 20.
