Eternal Darkness Remaster Pushed for by Nightdive Studios Boss

Is there a chance that the modern version of the 2000s GameCube hit, Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem, could be released for today’s gamers to experience? Given the flood of remakes and re-imaginings in the gaming industry lately, it seems like reviving Eternal Darkness could be a smart move. Could the continued interest in the game pave the way for what fans have been wanting, despite the obstacles preventing a series comeback thus far? One developer appears to believe this is possible.

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news from Nightdive Studios! Their CEO, Stephen Kick, is still working tirelessly to remaster the classic game, “Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem.” However, Nintendo holds the rights to any potential remake or reboot, which seems to make the project a long shot.

But after Nightdive Studios’ successful remaster of “System Shock 2,” their unwavering passion for “Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem” keeps us, the fans, hopeful for a future breakthrough. Fingers crossed!

In an interview with Shacknews, Kick expressed his desire to revisit the game Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem. However, he noted several obstacles that currently stand in the way. “Another game is particularly high on our remaster list, and that would be Eternal Darkness,” said Kick. “It’s been confined behind the GameCube Nintendo wall for a long time, and I personally would love to see it get re-released.

As an action-adventure game, “Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem” marked the first M-rated release from Nintendo, a company generally known for its family-friendly titles. The game incorporated elements of horror that made it a unique, though somewhat puzzling, gaming experience for many players.

Despite no significant progress on a sequel or remake being announced yet, hints of a “spiritual successor” to the game Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem were dropped by its original creators, Silicon Knights, during the 2010s. The proposed title was Shadow of the Eternals. Unfortunately, this project never came to fruition following a Kickstarter campaign in 2013, with development reportedly ceasing in 2018.

During an interview, it was discussed how many cherished video games from the past, which hold great significance for gamers, are unfortunately unplayable or inaccessible for future generations. This disheartening fact was expressed by Larry Kuperman of Nightdive Studios, who shared his feelings about these lost classics that once held significant influence on him. He stated, “I mourn the vast number of classic games that are no longer functioning or accessible to play.

Nightdive Studios has just wrapped up a successful remaster of the iconic ‘Heretic + Hexen’ games, which they released in collaboration with id Software and Bethesda Softworks. This revamped version of the classic “run-and-gun” games has been warmly received, earning a “Very Positive” review on Steam and a “Generally Favorable” rating on Metacritic.

On prior occasions, Nightdive Studios has shown a keen desire to revamp the classic game, Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem. As recently as last year in 2022, Kick publicly stated that this game ranked first on his wishlist.

Eternal Darkness is #1 on my list BTW.

In light of past efforts to reintroduce the series, it seems that beyond mere enthusiasm from creators, something more substantial might be needed to truly resurrect a game like this. One might wonder if Nintendo could potentially bring back the game considering their recent openness towards mature content on their platforms, given that titles such as Elden Ring are making their way onto Switch. Given the continued interest in a revival of Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem, wouldn’t this moment offer an ideal opportunity for Nintendo to capitalize on it?
